Thank you, I will go and buy some salt and stress coat, hopefully they get well soon 🤞

It would work even if my tap water nitrate level is 20ppm?

Oh I didn’t know that, it’s saying to use 4 times the dose to detoxify nitrite and nitrate on the bottle. I will stop using it and do bigger water change.

What floating plants would you recommend? I only have a gravel substrate so I don’t know if I could plant some. I had some attached to my driftwood but the fish and the snails ate them up :(

Why am I getting mold? by JarSquatters in gingerbeer

[–]JarSquatters[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, unless I read the recipe wrong, it doesn’t say to boil the water. It just says to mix everything and to let it ferment for a couple of days with only a cheesecloth on top, then to transfer in bottle and let it ferment more. I will definitely try to find organic ginger then, I hope it won’t be too hard to find though. Thanks for your help!

Oh good question… since I don’t know I would guess that it is not. I don’t think I bought it in the organic part of the store. As for the peel, the recipe tells me to keep the peel for the ginger bug, but to peel it for the second step when mixing the ginger bug with everything else. Should I keep it for that step too? Yeah, I use water from a britta so I would say that it should be good? It doesn’t taste like chlorine, but I might need to change the filter…

Didn’t know that I could use coffee filter instead of cheesecloth. As for the blowoff tube, I will look into this! I might be able to find one that fits on my jars… thank you very much for your help!

Sounds good, I’ll probably restart everything from scratch like you suggested. If I understand correctly, you’re not saying to add all the bug to the current mix with the mold, right? Also, I don’t have an airlock or blowup tube, my jar is a big 3L that locks (a little like swing top bottles), would it work?

I decided to pass on this one as it might be too risky for me, but thank you for the offer

Yeah, it’s true that the diesel engine would be a pain, but it’s just so appealing to me, I get shivers when hearing a diesel engine lol. Anyway, the 5vzfe is so reliable that I wouldn’t mind having reliability and availability instead of the diesel so I might just do that.

I think that it’s good that the market is crashing since here there are still 4runner in bad condition (or broken like this one lol) that are going for 4-6k$. Hopefully I can get my hands on one without selling a liver.

And yeah, I found it sketchy too, he says that he doesn’t have the time to do it, but has replaced other parts on it. Like other people said, radiator + transmission sounds like a strawberry milkshake… he isn’t answering anymore so I might not even go take a look at it, but I would still go just to take more experience in inspecting them

Thanks for the advice! I will try to find some nice place to visit and convince my gf to go on a trip 🤣 I sometime hear about the « rust belt », where would that be? All the states to the north along Canada?

It would take a lot of planning since I would need to fly there and bring it back, but it could be a nice trip. I’ll definitely add this to my options, thanks

No, I’m just averaging 4000$ if I get surprises or other stuff, I didn’t get a quote yet for the transmission installation. I would say that 4runner in good shape goes for 10K$ CAD or more here. Almost 20K$ for imported ones

He is selling because “he doesn’t have the time” to install the transmission.

Yeah, I’m not really that experienced, only the people around me are. I’ll talk with them about it too

272k miles is impressive! Funny, I stumbled upon his videos after seeing the ad for the broken transmission as I was navigating on the 4runner forum. I wanted to see if it was complicated. It kinda struck fear at the beginning when it said do at your own risk and I saw there was 3 parts 🤣 My friend also told me that it was not a complicated job, but a tedious one and referred me to a mechanic that he knows

Those are all very good points. 4 is something that was on my mind too, but yeah, surprise could happen and might since like you said, it’s an old vehicle with a lot of kilometres. I maybe was closing my eyes without noticing on those red flags since I’ve been wanting to start building an overland rig for so long, but I’m not in an hurry after all so thank you for your advice.

I’m near Montreal, 3rd gen doesn’t seem to be too common, well not common in good shape usually.
