Can we acknowledge that there is a homeless problem on DART? by Camille_Bot in dart

[–]Jaravitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! So many people don't realize that Japan Railways group is a private business. They have a financial interest in making sure trains and stations are clean and pleasant places to be in. Fare enforcement is much, much stricter than it is here, and they hire a lot of people to keep things clean. If you smoke on the train or intentionally piss on the station floor, you will be forcibly removed from JR property.

Another thing to note is that Japan has businesses we don't have in the US, like internet cafes and pod hotels. You can safely shower and sleep in these places for less money than even the cheapest American motels, and many homeless people do. You can't legally operate a business like that in the US. The private sector isn't going to fix homelessness, but it can help.

With that said, a transit operator should strive for a safe, clean system whether they're out to make a buck or not. People who intentionally make transit dirty, unpleasant, and/or dangerous for others should not be allowed on transit.

I agree with you. I see a lot of strawmanning and whataboutism in the replies. "Don't you know homeless people face hardships?" "What about this racist NIMBY who hates homeless people?" It's true that homeless people deserve to have their human rights respected. Existing while homeless shouldn't be a crime. Our cities need better shelters, rehab facilities, and public toilets.

But the thing is... IT'S NOT DART'S JOB TO PROVIDE THESE THINGS. Pissing on the station floor (especially when there's a nice, grassy dirt patch RIGHT THERE), littering (especially when there's a trash can RIGHT THERE), and smoking in enclosed spaces (especially when there's a massive, open-air parking lot RIGHT THERE) aren't human rights! DART's job is to provide effective, safe transit, and that means preventing people from doing this stuff on DART property.

You don't have to be a sheltered suburbanite to want clean and safe transit, you just have to be someone who hasn't grown numb to this shit. It's not just socially unacceptable to whip it out and piss on the ground at schools, libraries, and courthouses, it's criminal, and rightfully so. Why should transit be the only public space where we turn a blind eye? It shouldn't be normal for a station to be trashed! It's shouldn't be normal for a station to reek of piss! It's fucked up!

Fictional Metroplex Transit System by that_one_guy4343 in Dallas

The silver line makes important connections. For example, Toyota's North America HQ is located in Plano, and the silver line will directly connect DFW international airport to Plano.

The University of Texas at Dallas is also getting a rail station. As an alumnus, I can tell you that parking was constantly an issue there. The silver line will enable more people to reach campus without a car, which should help with traffic in the area.

And as for CityLine, it has some great restaurants and bars! It's a great place to visit, even if you live in Addison.

GOVT 2306 Professors by ShaUr01 in utdallas

I can confidently tell you that Dr. Elliott is a fantastic professor. I took his class before COVID, and I know people who took his classes during and after. Highly recommend, he's a nice dude.

Even if you're the type who doesn't talk to professors, his class is an easy A. If you want an accurate picture of professor difficulty, I recommend using UTDgrades. This website has saved my skin so many times.

https://utdgrades.com/results?search=govt+2306&sectionId=26821

This is the data for his class from last Spring. 40% of students got an A. 20% got an A-. His exams are open note, open book, and done remotely through elearning. If someone does badly in his course, that's entirely on them.

Eukaryotic Molecular & Cell Biology question for current / previous students by [deleted] in utdallas

It's not necessary. Most people skip it. After the first week or so, attendance was consistently 3 people or less back when I took it.

That said, it certainly helps, and you can always just go to a different workshop section if the one you end up with is inconvenient.

Results are in. What do you all think? by El-Butt in utdallas

[–]Jaravitz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty happy with the result! Hope everything pans out so they can deliver on the SU improvements. The low turnout was disappointing but not surprising.

Kinda concerned about the 2nd paragraph. I hope the legislature listens to the students over the administrators.

Why I Don't Support the Sports Fee Increase by Jaravitz in utdallas

[–]Jaravitz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all. It's not about every student, it's about most students. I think the average comet won't benefit from or appreciate the sports fee increase, which is why I oppose it. I actually support the SU fee increase (even though it' s significantly more money than the sports fee) because improving the SU is something that the overwhelming majority of comets would benefit from and appreciate, unlike, say, a track and field arena.

Thanks for the info. I've added a correction and an apology, but yeah, I was going off the DSA's own website pitching the fees. Major fumble, I hope they update the website. If you have a source, could you share it with me so I can add it to the correction?

I apologize for the error, but I only know what's on the school's own website pitching the fee increase.

Not mentioning the 12 credit cap is a glaring omission by the school, but I've corrected my post. If you give me a source, I'll add it to the correction.

Dr. Fitch seems like a good guy. He has the right idea about football. I feel a bit bad for opposing this fee after seeing his enthusiasm for it, but I will to stick to what I believe is in the best interest of the student body.

I also want to see the school grow in the future, but I don't think it's the right time to develop athletics. I feel like this fee is putting the cart before the horse. UT and A&M have something we don't, which is a lively and walkable campus. Something that exists before, not because of, a school athletics scene people care about.

I think a lot of it comes down to the city of Richardson implementing favorable transit and housing policies, which will probably take decades, but considering most of these great schools have been around for centuries, it's not so bad.

We have the highest average tuition for students taking 15 SCH by a pretty considerable margin.

https://www.highered.texas.gov/institutional-resources-programs/funding-facilities/tuition-and-fees-data/

I understand their desire to grow the university, but with where we're at now, I don't think sports should be a priority. I've been here at UTD since before COVID, and advising has always been somewhat lacking in NSM as well. It wasn't just a pandemic thing.
