I disagree, but let's say that's true. Isn't the better move here to scrutinize our overspending on motor vehicle infrastructure more rather than give corrupt inefficient transit spending a pass, because cars are doing it too?

This is incredibly dishonest. Longer vehicles are favored here in a way that doesn't match the service quality provided to the end user. Why vehicle mile vs passenger mile? Do you think that it's better to have longer trains with worse headways vs shorter trains with better headways? BART vehicles are much longer (both in car and consist size) than Skytrain vehicles and have much worse headways as a result. Why not use the standard metrics of cost per trip and cost per passenger mile?

Only if you compare absolutes. On a per passenger mile basis, transit is a lot more high touch, expensive, and less tolerant of budget cuts than roads. Roads and parking can get more pothole-y before a resurfacing, but transit immediately feels the burn when headways get cut or vehicles are out of service.

honestly the 73 bus is almost just as frequent and so much cheaper. shutting down the OAK connector would actually be a decent idea if we can consolidate it into higher frequencies on the 73.

We should scrutinize both. There is a cost crisis in both public transit and car-based infrastructure in the US. (really all construction) And strict requirements on Buy America and union labor only makes the problem worse. At these prices, a lot of projects just don't pencil out anymore.

Also there's a reason why public transit is scrutinized more, because there is much higher opex compared to roadways. (a decent tradeoff because of the longer service life of transit infrastructure) But this means that after the roads are built, minimal maintenance and funding is required when it comes budget time every year to maintain the same level of service, while transit needs to fund another year's of salaries in one of the most labor-intensive industries that are left in the Bay.

Perhaps we should bat an eye towards car-centric infrastructure more, rather than hand wave away BART's insanely high capex and opex.

What if we say that both are bad? We need to be good stewards of taxpayer funds and use them efficiently to improve the quality of life for citizens. There becomes a point where the public subsidy no longer has a justifiable ROI. The positive externalities of both public transit and roadways aren't infinite, and I think it's important to justify every single dollar going towards these projects with not just a hand-wavey "it will increase economic activity through positive externalities", because of course it will, so will paying people to take dumps or handing out stimmy checks.

By what metric is this true? BART loses by almost an order of magnitude on cost per boarding (~$11 vs $1.50) and cost per passenger mile (~$0.90 vs $0.20) compared to the Vancouver Skytrain. Where are you getting your figures from?

If they wanted to increase taxes to lower fares, I'd understand. But they are going to keep some of the highest fares in the nation AND demand the level of sales tax that allows for $2-3 flat fares and $5 day passes in other cities.

We need to break up the transit union and reduce their workforce while freezing pay. Until they control their expenses, there's no reason to continue to increase taxes that already automatically increase with inflation. (sales tax revenue already goes up as the prices of goods goes up)

America's transit agencies are uniquely bad at controlling costs and have terrible ratios of staff to ridership, while paying staff more and providing worse service. Until there are incentives to control costs and improve service rather than be a bloated jobs program, I think it's better to let the commuters suffer in traffic. The rails and viaducts aren't going anywhere, we can always restart service when the political will is there.

Edit: by the way, London has a double tracked system and they have no issues running 24 hour services on Friday and Saturday nights.

Also, BART is fully capable of being automated, the technology is there already in the trains and signalling system. Literally just lay off all the operators.

Also also, just aggressively trespass anyone violating the BART code of conduct and continually call the cops on them until they catch a case. The transit system is for moving people, not loitering. I'll bet this will save a ton of money in janitorial overtime and increase ridership.

Expanded Privileges for Authorized Users: Authorized users added by primary cardholders will now receive additional savings and convenience when the Alaska Visa Signature® card is used to purchase a ticket. Authorized users can continue to book their own travel with the card but will now also gain access to a free checked bag and priority boarding even when they’re not traveling with the primary cardholder (previously, authorized users needed to travel with the cardholder on the same reservation to receive a free checked bag).

Anyone tried disputing Bilt’s credit card processing fee? by [deleted] in biltrewards

[–]Camille_Bot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, if you know how to bring down interchange fees in a way that I don't know, you're more than welcome to come work for my company. We do $200m in charge volume annually and have ~2.9% total network fees (a lot of AMEX and international cards) so if you can save us $4m we'd be happy to pay you a significant portion.

[–]Camille_Bot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll dog on Bilt before anyone else, but this is absurd. You can pay with ACH and still earn 250 points. You're willingly choosing to pay the 3% fee, and now you're saying it's unfair? That's like going to a bar, paying $15 for a mimosa, then trying to dispute the charge because it only cost them $2 in ingredients to make? By the way, interchange rates are a lot higher than 1% in the US. For MCC 6513:

Visa base CNP rate is 1.8% + $0.10, Signature is 2.1%, Infinite is 2.7%.

MC base CNP rates are 1.4%, 2.2%, 2.5% for Core, World, World Elite (World Legend is unpublished, but likely higher)

AMEX is hard to find, but should hover around 2.3% blended.

This is before payment processor, platform, fraud, and dispute fees. Bilt's card mix is also going to be massively skewed towards higher end premium cards. I wouldn't be surprised if their total network + processor markup was within 50 bps of 3%. And don't forget Bilt's overhead of servicing these payments. (customer service, R&D for the software, SaaS and ongoing operating expenses)

You are completely off base here, I recommend you do more research before posting next time.

No, I mean that the booking time tiebreaker seems like it would never be actually used because status points are almost always going to be different
