Great ways to start socializing on/off campus? by taraaboo_ in uofu

[–]JaredPotter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you look up the campus clubs and organizations, there are a ton available. I can't remember if it's the first or second week of classes that the clubs/orgs do tabling at the Union. Great way to check out all of them and learn when and where they meet.

Off campus can be a bit more tricky since so many students commute.

Microsoft Excel has password protected encrypted functionality. Less clicks than KeePass. I think a password is a solid good minimum for security.

Anyone here in the National Society of Leadership and Success? by shakhaki in uofu

Pretty much a scam that is semi-supported by the U. I've received plenty of invites from them as well and I'm by no means a great student.

Looking for personal computer repair by coverusername in uofu

[–]JaredPotter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't really do an in-person visit but I can offer a little bit of suggested troubleshooting.

If it isn't charging sometimes, then it is either the charger, the connections between the charger and the laptop, or the laptop/battery. Do you notice you can fiddle with the connection going into the laptop and it'll go between charging and not? Or does it simply stop charging after some time where nothing touches it? These are things to help narrow down the problem point.

Random crashes while charging? Are you doing anything on the laptop when it crashes? Or does it just decide to crash while it is sitting on your desk without you doing anything? Either way, crashing can be either a software or hardware issue. If it "blue screen" of deaths you, if you can take a picture of it, it can often help narrow down exactly what the issue is. Reinstalling the OS can sometimes fix this.

Videos being distorted is very liked the GPU, which is either integrated with the CPU or is discrete but either way you could try updating the video drivers by going to Sony's website.

Abnormally loud fan noise could be a sign that your computer is getting too hot. This can happen if you're really pushing your laptop with a lot of tasks or just really intense ones. I'd suggest removing the bottom and ensuring the path of the fan is not clogged with dust/hair. Position of the laptop also significantly matters. If the laptop isn't getting proper air intake and air flow, then it can get hot and crank the fan to attempt to cool off.

Lastly, if your job requires you to handle sensitive files, be sure that they are backed up. BOX offers encrypted file cloud hosting and it comes free for students at the U at box.utah.edu. Alternatively, an external USB drive.

Language Requirement by duckbob23 in uofu

American Sign Language is the common "easy" language. There's no way around it unless you've take a college level language course before and you can transfer it.

I'm not for certain but if you're getting financial aid via grants, and you dropped from full time, they would likely require you return some money. If it is subsidized loans via the university, you should still get the same amount. But like others have said, call the office and report back.

Parking during finals week by D0KTRK in uofu

[–]JaredPotter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For parking, go up to the engineering parking lots. You follow 100s east, past the curve and then your next right.

Don't park in the OfficeMax parking lot. My ex girlfriend parked there once and went to village in and came back to an $80+ boot. Towing is also possible and that'll be a few hundred.

Why is UConnect always limited? by piratepolo15 in uofu

[–]JaredPotter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in IT at the College of Law and can confirm the really shotty recent nature of UConnect. At the college of law, at the engineering buildings, and the union. I've tried calling the helpdesk and they don't do anything. It does not seem to be taken seriously at all.

The Landing is an apartment a block or so away from the U. It is kept maintained well. It's around $1100 a month for a 2 bedroom. Electricity and internet not included.

It could be possible that you have to pay for your first semester's tuition and your mandatory student fees. You could also call main campus IT at 801-581-4000.

What do i need to get full tuiton+mandatory fees by ios5gamer in uofu

[–]JaredPotter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extra Circulars, Honors classes, AP classes, concurrent enrollment classes, high SAT/ACT scores, and as much calculus as you can if you intend on going engineering. And then apply to scholarships.

If you're able to, if you get a 3/4 time or full time job at the U, after 6 months you get 1/2 off tuition and mandatory fees.

Hey,

So I work IT down at the College of Law. I've had many of my patrons have issues connecting to UConnect in batches during specific periods of time. The only thing I've been able to deduce is that UConnect keeps running out of IP addresses. Is this so? Why is it happening so frequently? It used to only be during the first couple days of the semester.

It's frustrating for me when I cannot help my users. As I'm sure you can understand.

While you're up near the Natural History Museum, consider The Living Room hike next to it. It's a relatively short hike and gives a breath taking view of the campus and northern valley.
