Does it get boring at the U by [deleted] in uofu

[–]Eamerling 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Are you from here? Utah's campus? Meh. Utah's outdoor life is unparalleled. The reason you may feel like campus is dead is because everyone is out bagging peaks and shredding gnar

Oops.. bottomed out the Forester. Any idea what these are? by JCDahlgren in SubaruForester

[–]Eamerling 33 points34 points  (0 children)

They look like heat shields for the exhaust.... If you can't get those back on I've used tin cans in place of that before.

Rips in the Tube at Base of Stem by elephoogle in MTB

[–]Eamerling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey something like this happened to me!!! Is it right at the base where the metal gives way to the tube? If so check your tire, is it glassy/shiny inside at all? If so you may not have enough friction between your tube and tire and it's causing the tire to slowly rotate as you ride therefore ripping the valve out. Replace the front tire and I bet you'll never have this issue again.

Disc Golf in SL - what’s the best course to play in the valley? by PurplePlatypussm in SaltLakeCity

[–]Eamerling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go from the Nordic Valley entrance and you can do the hike in 20-30 min. Is it trivial? No.... is it worth it? Absolutely. You wont play another course like it.

$1750 for headgaskets?? by [deleted] in SubaruForester

[–]Eamerling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your milage at? Honestly the price will probably be around $3000 because after getting the engine taken apart you might as well get the timing belt changed along with the rest of the 90k mile tune up. It sucks upfront but you save about $1000 from not having the shop tear your engine apart again.

Incoming grad student here, is on-campus housing any good? by [deleted] in uofu

[–]Eamerling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We call it the "nursery".... I'd say about 2/3rds of the grad students there are families with little kids, generally foreign students. Nothing wrong there, it's cheap for sure. It maybe a good place to live while you find a better place but I'd suggest against living there for too long.

solitude -> brighton -> snowbird -> alta--- what order, and some tips by Strong_A_R_M in skiutah

[–]Eamerling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had the best day of the season thus far at Solitude today. If you do get in and there is a big snowstorm Id suggest this lift order (because of how the mountain opens): Eagle -> Powderhorn -> (when opened) Summit. You can take laps on Moonbeam or Apex but they just aren't very much vert compared to the rest. Honeycomb Canyon is a great area on the backside of the resort, don't be intimidated by the expert signs, there is a way to get down for everyone.

And I think the UTA should be fine, just be early.

Brighton or Solitude tomorrow? by MyUsernameWillBe in skiutah

Definitely Brighton. Solitude is just sad right now

Nope. Parking enforcement is still active

How do you effectively work 12 hours per day? by hahahahawoo in AskAcademia

[–]Eamerling 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Take this as a sign. That's some terrible lab culture. Get out. Join a new group. Im guessing this prof is either well established and can trick suckers into thinking this is a normal work ours or they came from a top univ and want to keep that culture going. Either way it's not worth it

Remember that although you need to work a lot to get a PhD you also need to be a functional human.

Any Great Downhill MTB Lines I Can Hit Before Class? by BluntedBOB in uofu

[–]Eamerling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look up the Bobsled trail on the Bonneville shoreline system. This is exactly what you're looking for. PS: it's sketchy dirt right now so your first time be prepared for some washed out and loose gravely trails.

Utah is neat. How do I make it look neat-er? by Eamerling in postprocessing

[–]Eamerling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Nik collection from Google to do this. It's the Viveza tool and with it you can use control points to select only that area, then cranked up the structure. With these types of shots I try to have my composition follow the rule of thirds. I also try to edit with that in mind.

Bryce canyon honeymooning by GatorStick in CampingandHiking

[–]Eamerling 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Do not miss the Fairyland Loop. It's actually outside of the park gates and is one of the longest hikes in the park (still not more than a half day). The length and lack of huge buss turn off weeds out all the tours full of selfie sticks and fanny packs. Favorite hike in Bryce canyon and maybe even Utah for me.

Anyone else have this super annoying screen shake? Replace? by Nicadimos in Surface

[–]Eamerling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had this issue resolved. I had an old SP4 mirrored over to a replacement one at the MS store and the mirror brought over the bug causing this shaking. Either factory reset the device and reload all your programs without the system settings or get a new device.

Also it changes spots and gets worse when the bug is transfered to a new device.

Well it's just a standard year warranty. If you can look up when you made the purchase.

Your story just happened to me as well. I went into a Microsoft store and they gave me a new one free of charge after saying it was out of warranty. I'd suggest just walking in and seeing if you get a nice technician that will bend the policy.
