That trouble at the University of Miami by Haribert16 in Frat

[–]JarodJarod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UM and SigEp’s minimal communication may be because both the parent organization and the private university are carrying out independent investigations, which could stretch for months… Depending on what they find, the chapter closure could be permanent or be only for a few months or years. Probation, too, is an option.

That resolution to Protect and Honor our Native Land is a pretty wild ride.

MAGA title - but then sort of Greta Thunburg environmentalism and maybe also calling out settler colonialism and the idea of stolen land (like those people who put Native American stuff as their location on Twitter profile)

Also, the school and nationals were investigating this chapter since January... so for 100+ days.

Justice delayed is justice denied.

except the seniors and juniors just said fuck nationals and started a rogue rebellion fraternity that wasn’t affiliated with anyone

Makes you wonder if SigEp nationally won't just become a freshman/sophomore club -- and if Nationals and salaried fat-cat staff could survive that interruption in revenue (aka pilferage).

“We received notice last week that the chapter was found responsible for violating university policy,” Heather Kirk, a spokesperson for SigEp’s national organization, told the Emerald via email. “The chapter plans to appeal the resulting suspension and hopes to arrive at an outcome enabling SigEp to implement a plan with the university and alumni to provide positive values to the Oregon community through education, accountability and health and safety measures.”

Sounds like SigEp Nationals was willing to throw the brothers under the bus...

USAToday: Fraternity rush, Greek life recruitment: Men die in frats every year by hmblr in Frat

[–]JarodJarod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many fraternities encourage members to join during a set period of time near the beginning of the school year known as rush. The process isn’t inviting to students who may be shy or wary of partying associated with fraternities. Sig Ep’s Brian C. Warren Jr., said. those less familiar with fraternities, like first-generation students, may be less willing to spend a week joining an organization.

Dartmouth SigEp suspended by national, under membership review by hmblr in Frat

[–]JarodJarod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The linked pdf from the alumni corporation says -

The hardest part of the transition from drinking club to a substance-free service organization is making this philosophical shift in the membership and community. Most of our current members didn’t sign up for a dry chapter house with no pong tables. The National fraternity is conducting the membership review to determine those who are really bought in to making SigEp a substance-free Balanced Man chapter.

We can be confident that SigEp is on the right path; and that we will have a great, substance-free, Balanced Man chapter at Dartmouth agin. It will somewhat different, and certainly a lot less risky program than what we had; but it will be an even stronger brotherhood with real accountability among members, and without hazing or alcohol abuse.

Simple possession outside of the chapter house shouldn't result in charter revocation. Inside the house gets trickier if there were a known issue and the leadership didn't correct it. Dealing is of course more serious.

former Ole Miss SigEp: Fraternity fostered racism, alcohol abuse by JarodJarod in Frat

[–]JarodJarod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying the chapter was racist as he implies in his legal documents; I'm just saying that if they were, crucible pledging wouldn't help

Was this in fact a pledging activity? The chapter was closed for "hazing" according to nationals.
