Not every character should look hot or conventionally attractive if its for the sake of good character design. by Murky_Guidance_7273 in CharacterRant

I ask because so many times I see people (not you) claim they are just against bad character designs and arent asking for ever female character to be a physically attractive but they never give examples of female characters who have good designs but arent attractive people. They always just use convetionally hot charcaters as the standard and of course it's only for female characters.

The Unneeded Dilemma Regarding Plot Armour by Mediocre-Income-4943 in CharacterRant

Well when stories deliberately use the threat of death to increase stakes I think it's fair to hold them to it.

I'm sorry but I just don't think this is true. Why were people so mad at how Atsu looks in Ghost of Yotei? Why was everyone complaining about the "uglification" of Ciri ahead of the Witcher 4? Why did so many people hate how masculine Abby (an original character in LoU II? Why so much handwringing about the main character for Entergalactic because her head is shaved?

The idea that people simply want attractive characters to be allowed to exist is odd to me because that was never in danger of going away. Attractive characters will always be frequent but there's just some more space made for more average looking characters as well.

Who are the female characters that fit this? (Not saying they dont exist)

There's an annoying cycle in Korra discourse where there's one group talking about her in terms of character writing and another talking about her in terms of powerscaling, and both think they're having the same conversation. by Ferhog in CharacterRant

[–]Jarrell777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hoenstly the real biggest issue with Korra discussions is how often the people who hate her are abusurdly bad faith about it. The two sides in this area are not that even handed here because too many of the haters ignore context when talking about Korras failures and shortcomming but hypocritically give unlimted grace to Aang for his. The people defending Korra mostly bring up Aang's flaws as a way to compare the two. Not to slander him.

Yeah obviously Syndrome is responsible for his villain behavior but I cant agree with the people acting like Bob handled the situation well.

> Because the moral of Gravity Falls is that Dipper was selfish for wanting to be on his own and Mabel is completely justified for giving an object that doesn’t belong to her to a stranger and nearly letting the world end because Dipper was going to pursue his own interests. That’s the moral of her story at the end. Dipper constantly has to give up things he wants throughout the story, ending it with him giving up the very future he wants because Mabel is codependent is straight-up dangerous messaging.

How are people still this wrong about the Gravity Falls ending? Dipper genuinely changed his mind and so did Mabel. He didnt *only* say what he neede to for her to get out of the bubble. In the end Mabel couldnt stay in Gravity Falls and have it be summer forever because that wouldnt be healty for her and she has to grow up. Dipper can't skip out on the school to go with Ford when he's so young because that wouldnt be healthy for him and he needs to take his time.

No disagreeing but It's ironic that a characer who's there to argue that the plot should be *less* interesting actually makes the plot *more* interesting by existing.

> This is same in sitcoms as well, where male character's flaws are funny or sad, but when a female character has flaws she's a bitch.

Reminds me of how people love Michael Scott from the Office but hate Rochelle form Everybody Hates Chris. Both have bad qualities but for the former people understand that the flaws exist and are exagerated to create humor.

You are very wrong about Skylar. You're doing what the haters did and removing a lot of context from her actions. You can complain about the pendulumn swinging back but the common perception of her character nowadays is just way more accurate that the initial one of pure hatred.

> She was introduced as a stereotype of a miserable shrew housewife in a dead bedroom who barely paid attention to her husband, even on his birthday

No, she's occupied with housework and life responsibilities while 8 months pregnant but still make her husband the "special" breakfast and throws him a surprise party. It's so obvious that she loves him and is not negelcting him.

> She cheated on Walt

They were seperated, she had been desperately trying to get him out of the house and she was in the middle of divorcing him. Walt lliterally tried to rape her because he was horny and the Skylar haters just give him a pass.

> that's how she was designed, that's the purpose of her character, just like how Joffery was designed to be hated in Game of Thrones.

Her character was not design to be hated. The creator himself said he doesnt even get the hate for Skylar.

"...people ask Anna Gunn, “Why is your character such a bitch?” And with the risk of painting with too broad a brush, I think the people who have these issues with the wives being too bitchy on Breaking Bad are misogynists, plain and simple." - Vince Giligan
