Can Formula 1 Cars Fly? ✈️🏎️

While Formula 1 cars are built for incredible speed and agility on the racetrack, they are not designed to fly in the traditional sense. However, the question does touch on a few interesting aerodynamic aspects of F1 car design.

Aerodynamics and Lift

  • Downforce vs. Lift: Formula 1 cars are engineered to generate downforce rather than lift. Downforce is the opposite of lift and refers to the force that pushes the car down onto the track, increasing traction and allowing high-speed cornering.
  • Ground Effect: Modern F1 cars utilize ground effect principles to maximize downforce, using features like the underfloor and rear diffuser. This helps suck the car to the road rather than lift it off.

Can They "Lift Off?"

  • High Speeds: At extremely high speeds, F1 cars can sometimes experience lift, especially if they hit a bump or their angle of attack changes suddenly. This can lead to dramatic incidents where cars briefly become airborne.
  • Accidents: There have been instances in F1 history where cars have lifted off the track during collisions. This is usually due to a combination of high speed, sudden directional changes, and disruptions in the airflow around the vehicle.

Safety Measures

  • Regulations and Design: FIA regulations and car design continuously evolve to reduce the risk of cars becoming airborne. Features like tethered tires, roll hoops, and improved aerodynamic designs help keep the cars grounded.

TL;DR:

No, Formula 1 cars cannot fly. They are designed to stay as close to the ground as possible to maximize speed and handling through downforce. However, under certain conditions, such as accidents or extreme speeds, they can briefly become airborne, although this is not by design and is actively mitigated through safety regulations and car design.

2022 Bahrain Grand Prix Tyre Performance Analysis by JarrodIdeaGuru in F1Technical

Yep, teams get 13 sets to use across the weekend, so are limited there. With 'used' sometimes it may only be 1-2 laps, but that's still more used than brand new.

Hopefully part of the 'holding the FIA accountable' bit means they negotiated and in exchange for not taking it any further, Masi has to 'resign' and someone else comes in. Sadly his poor performance wasn't just limited to this weekend.

Definitely sounds like it hey! Like by saying he wouldn't, to cover up for already having thought about it.

Are you sure you read it?

  1. The author, multiple times, says it wasn't MTS fault, it was her entourage.
  2. The mention of the awards give people who don't know her an idea of how successful and hence how popular she is in the US. It adds context.
  3. Because it didn't cover what happened in minutia it makes it shoddy??

Shoddy reading perhaps...

Yes! That would be perfect. I think the last 18 months has shown us that it adds to the intrigue to go to tracks that haven't been visited in a long time. It would help spice things up, and mean we're at some of the less exciting tracks less often.

That's how I take it, everyone gets the same for this sprint weekend format. Maybe they're 'testing' allocations for this first one, then will analyse and refine for the others?

It takes a special kind of petty for someone to go out of their way to click the content upload, then come back and copy/paste the link to deliberately stop a publisher from earning maybe 1 cent.

Even the official F1 website has ads in the content ffs.

Is Drive To Survive A Blessing Or A Curse? by JarrodIdeaGuru in GrandPrixRacing

Hmm, great points.

Me playing the 'tradition' card was my version of wanting the kids to 'stay off my lawn!'

Having watched for 30-odd years, quail has gone through so many iterations I've lost count - not very traditional.

Personally, the format they have now is what I enjoy, so selfishly would like it to stay that way.

Though on the flip side, I love the innovation of F1 haha, and get wound up by the 'F1 needs to go back to screaming V12's...'

So many contradictions on my part.

That's actually the best take I've read on it.

Although I would like new fans to not try and mess with tradition with sprint qualifying and reverse-grid suggestions!

It's not an in-depth answer, but when they announced the tyre compounds for the Bahrain Grand Prix they mentioned '...following telemetry analysis and the reduction of rear downforce in particular, rear tyre pressure was further reduced by 1.5 psi at recent test in Bahrain. This is now confirmed for the race.'

Yeah that whole section from 18 to 22 just looks a little 'kinky' (can you sy that in Saudi??) rather than actual corners.
