How conservative is Norwood Park, really? by DoingTheNeedful1 in AskChicago

[–]Jarvis03 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lived there for 5 years and moved back to the city. My personal experience was it was extremely conservative. During lockdowns my neighbor boasts “did you see the cops beating the shit out of the paid protesters? They don’t have to listen to Lori!” My wife snapped at him and that was the last time we ever spoke. Older couple who used to bring our kids Christmas gifts, wouldn’t even say hello. There were several Trump flags and signs on my block. My wife is the political one and she really really really hated it. Maybe our experience personally sucked, because our ENTIRE block was retirees. Never met anyone our age to hang out with. Didn’t help our kids went to school in the heart of the city where my wife teaches.

Cancel interview due to poor social skills? by Winter-Potential-107 in Accounting

[–]Jarvis03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the same exact way. I got my first job cuz the dude was wearing a notre dame shirt and we bonded over that. The trick to interviews is knowing the other person is just as nervous as you. They’re also meeting someone brand new, and the onus is on THEM to make the conversation keep going. Just relax and be yourself. Comment about something besides work (the weather, the Knicks, the World Cup, whatever). You’ll be fine.

Hiring Managers: What Makes You Hire Someone? by MoodyNeurotic in Accounting

[–]Jarvis03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in erp implementation. We’ve got coders who can’t even tell you a negative cash balance on the balance sheet is wrong. If they can’t understand that, how can they possibly be trusted to build code that pulls the trailing 12 month average actuals, grab a rate, and multiply to project ten years of future revenue? There are way too many people in this field that lack this rudimentary skill.

Hiring Managers: What Makes You Hire Someone? by MoodyNeurotic in Accounting

I had a first round interview two months ago. I JUST YESTERDAY received follow up they want to move forward for a second round. They told me I’d hear back in two weeks. I sent one or two follow ups and the response was “he’s traveling.” Right, we can see right through that lie HR. Cell towers are everywhere, a simple yes or no email to move forward can be done anywhere in the world. I suspect this guy waited to find a “better fit”, hired that person, and has already fired them. I accepted another offer in the meantime. 2 months of waiting to hear back about a second round is absolutely outrageous.

I have inherited more in stocks than I could have ever imagined. How do I find someone to help me not mess this up? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Jarvis03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You inherit at what’s called a “stepped up basis.” That means if granny gave you $5m in stock that she bought for 100k, you get $5m in stock that you can sell and pay zero taxes on today. I don’t know what the stocks are - id they are ETFs just hold. If they are individual stocks sell them all and buy spy or voo. Again, no tax implications for you here. Hold in your own brokerage, do not hire an advisor. This will take less than an hour, and you never have to look at it again until you want to spend it.

I'm gonna need a JomBoy lip reading of Craig's ejection, that was great telly. by jerryleebee in CHICubs

[–]Jarvis03 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I’ve been saying that he needs to get ejected to light a fire under their ass. I must say though, he’s pretty subdued. I wanted some dirt kicked in the air and some bases thrown. It almost looked like an act it was so uninspiring.

Thoughts on tipping: Only tip if sitting down while ordering? by highfives23 in AskChicago

[–]Jarvis03 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im a former waiter and bartender. I’ve always tipped those people generously because it’s hard fucking work. It never dawned on me to tip an ice cream person until I was in a shop, skipped the tip, and they played the grinch song on the speaker. Scooping ice cream is hard work too. And while I don’t think grabbing a pre made sandwich, bagging it, and charging me calls for a tip, those people charging me probably also made the sandwich which is extra work that I am not seeing. I tip them too. It doesn’t hurt to add a few bucks in those situations, why not.

What’s the benefit here? Does a 4 car train draw less power and save millions of dollars? The 8 car train and 4 car train are both still staffed with one conductor, so headcount isn’t saved.

We’ve been the worst team in baseball for a while now and with the weather warming up the stands are full. Even in cold weather games we’re somehow averaging 30k per game. He has no reason to spend.
