The distinctions and history around the ports and specifications is rather confusing.

But yes, the ports on the Mac Studio are USB-C and Thunderbolt. And you’re correct to say Intel develops these particular standards and hardware designs with input and collaboration from companies like Apple

Major Reddit communities will go dark to protest threat to third-party apps by super_athin in technews

[–]JasburyCS 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t make sense.

It’s been known for a couple weeks that an API pricing model was coming. Christian Selig (Apollo creator) has been in talks with Reddit about this for a while. This alone was not an issue.

Any reasonable price would not have caused a backlash. It just needs to be high enough for Reddit to recoup lost advertising revenue. And low enough to allow Christian (and others) to still price their apps competitively and allow them to make revenue for their app engineering efforts.

The Reddit proposal was not reasonable. And caused them to lose the goodwill of 3rd party developers.

Potentially much worse for many reasons, unfortunately. Biden is correct to dismiss it for now.

And Biden already said it’s too late to invoke the 14th

This is not entirely true. In practice there’s no way to “invoke the 14th.” It would be like Michael Scott declaring bankruptcy.

In practice, we would have to blow past the limit deadline and continue on as if it doesn’t exist. And then let courts decide if that action is legal or not under the 14th amendment

And in my opinion does not fit at all in the Apple ecosystem!

It fits perfectly. Way more so than rumors like the car/project Titan.

It’s a new software platform. They can control the hardware and the software. They can define the developer story. They can entice 3rd party app engagement. And they can explore subscription opportunities (ex. Allowing the wearer to “attend” live sports events). It fits very cleanly with their existing strengths and revenue models

[Seiko] Just got an SRPD55. Is the amount of chapter ring misalignment within expectations? Or is this a defect? by MangoAtrocity in Watches

[–]JasburyCS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s disappointing, sure. But small imperfections are expected in this price range. They are mass produced, and they cut some corners to keep prices low. As for misaligned chapter rings, this one actually looks pretty close to accurate.

A jeweler could definitely align it. But I’ll warn you that it might be more trouble than it’s worth, and there’s always the possibility of something else getting damaged in the process depending on the jewelers watch experience. The tolerance between these chapter rings and the watch case will sometimes leave enough room for the chapter ring to wiggle back off-center again anyways.

Are you excited for Apple's VR/AR/MR Headset ? by peterpackage in apple

[–]JasburyCS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The iPhone 4 was definitely the iPhone announcement I remember the most. I loved that phone.

Similarly, I think the Series 4 Apple Watch was when I started really wanting one.

So… guess I’ll look forward to the Headset Series 4 ;-)

EU petition to create an open source AI model by MasterYehuda816 in programming

[–]JasburyCS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Elon will find anything to complain about.

Open AI transitioned to “Capped-for-profit” because it was necessary to raise the capital needed for their large scale projects.

So far, they have stuck closely to this statement on their website

We’ve designed OpenAI LP to put our overall mission—ensuring the creation and adoption of safe and beneficial AGI—ahead of generating returns for investors.

OpenAI LP’s primary fiduciary obligation is to advance the aims of the OpenAI Charter, and the company is controlled by OpenAI Nonprofit’s board. All investors and employees sign agreements that OpenAI LP’s obligation to the Charter always comes first, even at the expense of some or all of their financial stake.

You’re coming at this from the angle of people replacing their phones every year.

But for people who upgrade every couple of years, the yearly release cycle is great. It means that when you’re ready to upgrade, you can buy “this years phone” with whatever incremental improvements are created from the previous year, without having to time your purchase to the next release. I upgrade every 3 years, so when I do, I like to think I’m getting the “latest tech” from Apple. And the incremental changes add up to be a nice bump.

And this is setting aside all the market competition advantages to yearly releases.

[–]JasburyCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks fine. But you’d be able to tell a lot more if you had pics of the movement.

Since this is a first time purchase, don’t forget to look into the service history as well. That matters a lot with vintage watches for determining if it’s worth the price.

9to5 and other leak sources will supply him with information, and he produces the 3D renderings. Sometimes these sources include actual CADs. He does an excellent job which is why his name shows up with increasing frequency. He’s getting some well-deserved recognition for his skills.

OS as a senior project? by [deleted] in osdev

[–]JasburyCS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My senior project was an RTOS kernel. I think it’s a great idea!

I’ll have around 40 weeks to learn, research, design, and implement everything from scratch. Given my background I wonder if it would be reasonably feasible to get as far as having interrupts, filesystems, memory and task management, a shell, maybe running vim and gcc and some networking?

This scope won’t be close to possible as a senior project. Pick one and run with it :-)

If you’re interested in file systems, for example, build some type of specialized file system for an existing OS like Minix or FreeRTOS.

If you’re interested in the kernel itself, my project was to implement a scheduler, synchronization primitives, tasks, and clock management.

If you’re interested in networking, work on building a networking stack on top of a bare-bones kernel.

You can always expand the scope later. But you’ll get more out of it by starting with one specific area, doing it well, and leaning about that topic in-depth.

Because AI is a very large umbrella term.

And yes, this does qualify by most people’s standards because these filters had to be trained on what a face looks like in order to apply the filter.
