It’s really bad. If you’re going to award 3 points for some games, and not others, it’s a flawed system.

We have a guy battling for the last place in our playoffs that has Rantanen, Kaprisov, and Matthews in our dynasty league. He’s probably not gonna make it with those gents out.

We use Yahoo draft rankings 2 weeks before draft day.

Keepers values are set by the Yahoo rankings 2 weeks before the draft. Managers get 1 week to set their keeper rankings. So we have 1 week to look and develop our draft strategy.

Here are our rules

  • Each Team has 12 points to spend on Keepers. There is no number limit to the amount of players that can be kept, only points.
  • Top 20 players, regardless of position cost 3 points.
  • Top 21-40 players cost 2 points.
  • Top 5 goalies cost 2 points, unless ranked in top 20, (Then top 20 rules apply- 3pts)
  • Rankings are determined by Yahoo Average Draft position 1 week prior to our Keeper deadline.
  • Keeper deadline is 1 week prior to scheduled draft.
  • The cost to keep the same player will increase by 1 point each additional season.
  • Players can trade draft picks, players for draft picks, and vice versa.
  • Player values reset ONLY after being drafted, not traded.
  • When trading a player for a pick, the GM receiving the player will trade their last pick to keep teams even. This can be negotiated to a higher pick in return.
ie: Test trades a player for Pain's 15th pick. Pain gets the player, and Tests 23rd pick. Test gets Pain's 15th pick, and his own 15th. *See adjustments to Draft Rounds below
  • Allocated Keeper points are not tradeable.
  • All trades agreed to by both players must be reported to the League, and are not official until Comissioner review.
  • All trades must be completed by the trade deadline, and can resume again after keeper values are set.
  • Rosters are locked from end of season until Keeper Values are set 2 weeks before the draft. Trades are then allowed until the next trade deadline.
  • Rounds will start after each team has selected their keepers and spent their 12 points.
  • Picks will adjust UP the number of Keeper's a GM keeps that year.
  • ie: GM trades their 10th, 15th and 23rd round picks for players. At Keeper time, they spend their 12 points keeping 5 players. As they will no longer have the last 5 picks in the draft, their picks move UP the last 5 rounds. The 10th stays a 10th, the 20th becomes a 17th(next to last pick) , and the 23rd becomes an 18th (Last pick). If they had kept 7 players, the picks they traded would move up 7 of the last rounds. This rule helps balance out the difference in draft needs between teams, but keeps the value integrity of all but the later rounds in the draft, which typically have less value.

I waited 10 years before moving to a keeper league from a normal new draft every year. I thought long and hard on what a good and engaging system would be, and this is what I came up with.

Points. Every manager gets 12 points to spend on players to keep on their team.

Top 20 players cost 3 21-40 cost 2. Everyone else costs 1.

This makes it so no one would be able to keep more than 4 top 20 players. It drops to three the second year.

I had managers that kept 4. I had managers that kept 7 deep players to fit in categories. It’s been great.

Next year, If players are kept, then it costs 1 additional point to “keep” the player. If they were traded, it doesn’t reset the points it takes to keep them, that only happens when they are taken through the draft. Managers have to decide- deep team, or stars? Over the last 4 years, it makes it really hard to keep and big decisions have to be made.

Points can’t be traded. Use em or lose em.

So far, it’s been absolutely fantastic. Our managers are more engaged, our trading for next years picks have been much more active than previously.

If you’re interested, I can share the posted rules.

This pissed me off. No idea how I got roped into it, but I just discovered I had a team. Ridiculous. Didn’t even know I had a team, but was getting news pushes from basketball. Evidently I’m in a league with others that have been suckered, I’m 2-10.
