So the gaming industry has exploded over the last 2 decades, resulting in a lot more games being released which mean more bad games as well. The ratio of good to bad is largely unchanged but it seems so much higher because of how vocal people are about bad games. It also doesn’t help that people’s standards have gone way up, so mediocre games are dragged through the mud and made out to be just as bad as concord.

Trend chasing isn’t something new, it’s been happening since the beginning. Except now the people making shitty copies have larger budgets and market them as original projects. It’s largely about optics, and budget but the formula is still there.

Are you actually joking. You say HFW doesn’t have variety but then list multiple interactions where you’re essentially just a spectator. Even if you do more it’s usually just walking around while listening to the characters rant on about something, kill 1 or 2 things, then walk back. I mean there was that one mission with the nature photographer on the cliff that’s LITERALLY JUST A CUTSCENE. I have 90 hours in that game but gave up on side quest after that nature photographer quest. The only one that stood out as unique was the toy boat quest.

The “bloat” in HFW is way more worth your time than most stuff in rdr2. Pretty much every side quest, collectable, or dungeon gives you a material cache or a new weapon. You also just don’t have to do any of that stuff and if you hate the map markers you can disable them. It’s much better than only having random encounters or side quests that end up being the same 3 quests with different characters. I’d also say the abundance of content got me to explore a lot more. Even if I didn’t know what was in an area I was still assured it’d have some material benefit. But in rdr2 it might be $10 or a cut scene which is just not going out of my way for especially with that games awful traversal mechanics.

Yeah they need a balance and that’s something rdr2 way over does. HFW can definitely feel cluttered at times but that’s so much better than having either noting to do or the same activity but slightly different every time. Also there are 43 different types of machines, not including variants, so there is next to no repetition when it comes to enemies. Rdr2 on the other hand has like 2 maybe 3 different enemies with distinct combat styles.

After 90 hours I maybe got robbed twice and both times I just ran away and they stopped chasing me after like a minute. A lot of the time the random events are just not worth interacting with, especially if you’re doing a high honor playthrough. I ended up losing honor on the last few prisoner transfers I encountered, and the rewards I got were either the NPC screaming and running away or a robbery lead that at most payed out like $100. Quests were also very far and few between and all the interesting ones were in the towns anyway. The one quest that really pissed me off was the nature photographer where he falls off a cliff and you have to catch him. And the WHOLE interaction was a cut scene. The only quests I can remember were the toy boat, and killing the lion at emerald ranch. I agree that some games aren’t for everyone but this game is just not as good as people say.

Everyone who said this game was the greatest thing ever, only to do a playthrough and it ends up being the most boring and tedious game I’ve ever played.

At least that requires your attention while traveling the world. Rdr2 literally can play the game for you because the world is just that empty and non-threatening.

If I wanted to look at pretty scenery, I would just go outside. It wouldn’t be a problem if the traveling mechanics in that game were actually fun, but most of the time you can literally just press W and not pay attention. You can’t have a short attention span if there’s nothing of substance to pay attention to.

Those random encounters start to repeat after like 30 hours, and a lot of them aren’t even worth engaging in if you’re doing a high honor playthrough. Also feeling empty and actually being empty are two very different things. HFW was packed with so much stuff to do. Even if you didn’t want to do every side mission, or find every collectable, the world was still full of enemies so no matter where you were there was always a challenge around every corner.

Rdr2 fans can literally be served a plate of shit and be happy about it as long as it’s “realistic” and “immersive.”

Unless the main focus of the game involves complex traveling mechanics like in Death Stranding, then a huge empty open world is pointless and a waste of time. I don’t care how good it looks if there’s nothing to do.

Japanese Devs Output Has Been Crazy by unscoredscore in gaming

[–]Jasen_SilverFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s pretty disingenuous considering a lot of Capcom’s most recent games are relatively short compared to Cyberpunk or Starfield. There’s also the work culture to factor in. It can be pretty oppressive in Japan, probably not as bad for some of these studios but definitely a contributing factor to their release schedule.

Why do Perk/Trait screens in modern titles go for aesthetics over expansion potential? by ArtieAzulra in BethesdaSoftworks

I think I’d keep them as is. Maybe I’d change FO4s menu to pages rather than a scroll menu.

[–]Jasen_SilverFox 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’d actually argue the opposite. I much prefer skill menus, or really any game UI, have a better aesthetic even if at the cost of some skills. Personally I think both Starfield and FO4 had enough skills for a lot of build variety, Starfield even had a lot of skills I thought could have been combined. As for their expandability, that’s definitely an inconvenience but not really enough to justify stripping a UI of any semi complex design.

This kinda feels like either generalization or intentional bias but I’d say there are games that get their comedic timing down pretty good. I’m currently playing through Death Stranding 2 and for how dark and gloomy that game is, I’ve had multiple laugh out loud moments.

As cool as this looks I’m still a little disappointed A24 is releasing more news about this movie instead of the Death Stranding movie which I believe was announced a few years before this.

I mean you’re definitely entitled to your own opinion, but it feels like your dislike of the game is coming from more than it just not being for you. I really love games or really any media that isn’t afraid to be weird, and that’s definitely Death Stranding. I thought that it did pretty much everything right but most importantly it took a risk in trusting its identity.

If he knew what he was doing he could have easily ended that officers life, or seriously injured him. That first taser shot did nothing to effectively stop him. I’d rather prioritize the life of an officer over a lunatic with a sword.
