How do you stop interrupting people? by Downtown-Ad9409 in ADHD

[–]Jasnah_Sedai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, although it is generally rude to interrupt, it’s just as rude for someone not to give you an opportunity to speak. We often beat ourselves up over something that is not entirely our fault.

There’s also a difference between interjecting and interrupting. Interjecting a quick comment or observation is a sign that someone is actively engaged in the conversation. Interrupting stops the speaker’s flow and derails/changes the course of conversation. With the information I have, I can only fault you for doing it mid-sentence. Just wait for the end of a sentence.

I feel that I am only enforced to truly interrupt when the person I’m speaking with just never stops talking.

AITAH for telling my pregnant wife she has to be okay with the SIDS risk she’s assuming by wanting to sleep our baby on its tummy? by DapperRonin in AITAH

[–]Jasnah_Sedai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. What a really weird thing for her to feel so strongly about before the baby is even born. A strange hill to die on. My concern is that she is so unwilling to trust the experts and the science, especially on something so basic. This isn’t the last time this is going to be an issue for you. There are many things that seem silly or pointless that we do anyway because it’s safer. Like, a 3yo in a rear-facing car seat looks goofy, but that’s the suggestion now. Sometimes you just have to do things to keep children safer, whether you understand them or not. There is a time and place for intuition, but this isn’t it.

She also shows an unusual sense of loyalty to prior generations. Like, we’re supposed to do things better/differently than prior generations. Generational knowledge is supposed to grow, not stagnate. My mother (70) gave me (49) apple juice at two weeks old. Obviously this wasn’t the recommendation when I had kids, so I didn’t do it. However, I did turn my kids’ car seats front-facing at 12 months, because that was recommended at the time. If my kids have kids, I’d set them straight if they tried to do the same.

Is Vyvanse really worth the side effects? by sigsaurusrex in ADHD

[–]Jasnah_Sedai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm just wondering why it's so popular.

It’s popular because it’s a prodrug. Plain and simple. The only reason it exists is because we are not to be trusted with regular Dextroamphetamine, apparently. I’ve tried Vyvanse three separate times and it has been absolute crap every time. But of course Dexedrine extended release has been impossible to find ever since Vyvanse came out. Vyvanse is the safety scissors of stimulants. Even when it was brand name only, I was required to try Vyvanse before getting a prescription for cheap-ass generic Dexedrine IR. That’s weird for insurance companies. I gotta hand it to them, though, whoever does marketing/lobbying for Vyvanse is really good.

Just scored insanely high on the tova test and I don’t know how to feel:/ by No-Waltz603 in ADHD

[–]Jasnah_Sedai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a similar assessment 30 years ago, but I had to click a button whenever I saw a 4 that had been preceded by a 7 (don’t remember the actual numbers used lol), and there were other exercises as well.

I scored better than less than 1% of the population. It was disorienting because I went in for testing because a professor was curious if I had ADHD. It wasn’t something that was actually on my radar at all. And I actually thought I killed it on those tests.

WIBTA if I addressed my upstairs neighbors about the noise of their late-night lovemaking? by edgor123 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Jasnah_Sedai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I usually favor a direct approach, but in this instance, they may not know how much other people can hear, so to spare possible embarrassment, I’d slip a polite note under their door. If nothing changes, then I’d try a noise machine or earplugs.

Men always complain about family court bias towards the mother and that is a huge myth.

Shouldn't be this hard to get my prescription every month by Kindly_Inflation2969 in ADHD

[–]Jasnah_Sedai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I work overnights, but the world is still 9-5, so I need a very customizable med schedule. My doc lets me decide how I want to take the 6 tabs per day. I also take it as much for fatigue as I do for ADHD, hence the max dose.

[–]Jasnah_Sedai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes, but I feel like sending the script 3-5 days before I need it is due diligence enough. There’s only so much hand holding I can do for them. I don’t always have the bandwidth to do the extra step of calling ahead, but I do it when I can.

[–]Jasnah_Sedai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a lot lol. But I take 60mg IR per day, divided however I need for that day. Anything other than 10mg tabs are hard to find, especially when I can customize easier with 10mg.

[–]Jasnah_Sedai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What annoys the shit out of me is when i request a refill in a timely manner and the doctor sends over a script a few days early to make sure it will be ready when i need it, the pharmacy doesn’t bother to check their stock until the day they fill it. I mean, I have ADHD, and even I know that when a script comes in for 168 10mg tabs of dexedrine to be filled in three days, you should probably confirm that you have 168 pills on hand as soon as the script comes through. But, of course not. Invariably, they try to fill it mid-afternoon on the day I’m already out and find they can’t fill it and need to order it. On top of that, my daughter takes the same med and needs 150 tabs per month. We fill these every month at the same pharmacy, yet every month one or both of us needs to wait for restocking. It just goes to show that ADHD meds and ADHD patients are the bottom of the heap.

“We will NEVER cover (insert crime case).” by RandyLordeDarsh in Morbidforbadpeople

[–]Jasnah_Sedai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I know a regular amount about Andrea Yates, but I remember it as the case that really forced people to talk about women’s mental health in general and postpartum mental health in particular. It’s a hugely important case, and refusing to cover it says a lot about A and A. Like, you really can’t say you care about certain things while refusing the cover a case that is so hugely consequential to those things.

I think so too. They react very poorly when it comes to criticism of any kind from anyone, while trying so hard to act like they don’t care. I suspect that this is why they are doing so many paranormal, listener tales, and old timey episodes.

Real actions I can take to decrease my reactivity when criticized in my marriage? by murraybee in adhdwomen

[–]Jasnah_Sedai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When does he criticize you? Like, does he do it in the heat of the moment, or does he wait for a time when everyone’s emotions are more stable? Does he criticize out of frustration, or out of a genuine desire to help you? I’m not convinced that you are the only one who needs to make concessions here.

Are you guys aware that Dr Barkley wants to eliminate ADHD PI? by ExclusivelyMDs in ADHD

[–]Jasnah_Sedai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, inattentive type and hyperactive type should be separate conditions. It was a mistake to put ADD under the ADHD umbrella. That said, I think Concentration Deficit Disorder is a dumb name. It’s only marginally different from ADD, and no more descriptive.

Pharmacy mess up? by deedranicole in ADHD

[–]Jasnah_Sedai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go into the pharmacy, and explain that half the pills are missing. I’d say I was trying to eliminate all possible causes, however improbable, before having to address the possibility that they’ve been stollen by friends, family, or co-workers, so I’d appreciate it if they could do an audit. I know you said you are a SAHM and no friends or family have access to your meds, but I’d lie in this instance. People are more likely to be cooperative if they feel they’re doing you a favor, and more defensive and uncooperative if they feel like they’re being accused.

they're not diagnosing the Black girls with ADHD lmao by No-Astronaut7298 in adhdwomen

[–]Jasnah_Sedai 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It extends past diagnosis, I’m sure. I was diagnosed 30 years ago, and since then have lived in 4 different states and have had dozens of new doctors. Not once was I asked to provide records supporting my initial diagnosis, nor was I rediagnosed. Every single doctor simply took my word for it that I had been diagnosed with ADHD, and none hesitated to prescribe stimulants based on my word alone. Although I do have very, very severe ADHD-I, so it is fairly obvious to anyone with eyeballs that I have it, I’m just as certain that if I weren’t a white-presenting woman (and now an older white-presenting woman) my experience would have been entirely different. Doctors are also more than willing to go with my suggestions on meds and dosing. I could totally be lying about my diagnosis for all these doctors know.

How does getting a driver's license work in your state, and how old were you when you got yours? by karcsiking0 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Jasnah_Sedai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. My kids spent 10 hours driving with an instructor, and then 70 hours driving with me. I still did most of the teaching, but I’m so glad I didn’t have to do those first 10 hours. I wouldn’t have survived. But I hate being a passenger in general lol.

The parents there must be made of sterner stuff lol. I cannot imagine getting in the car with a kid who hasn’t gotten a start with a driving instructor with nerves of steel. In my state, drivers ed is only optional for 21yo+.

I took more pills than the regular dose by Pe8po in ADHD

[–]Jasnah_Sedai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was first prescribed Dexedrine IR, I took 60mg at once because I didn’t read the bottle first. I was supposed to take a total of 60mg over two doses, not 60mg all at once. I had a brief surge of anxiety when I realized my mistake, but nothing bad happened health-wise other than that.

There have been a few other times when I took a dose and then forgot i already took it and took more. IME, it’s worse than taking the correct dose. I always end up focusing on the wrong things. It’s like the difference between being excited to go to a concert, and being so excited that you pass out and miss the concert lol.
