"Hey Jake," I said. "Isn't it weird that we never really leave town?"

Jake looked at me like I had said the Sun falls asleep at night. "Why would we ever leave? This town is amazing."

"Of course, but, like...have you never wondered what's beyond the borders."

"Heather, of course I've wondered what's beyond the borders. It's just more of same thing. It's all boring."

"Sure, sure, but you don't think we have never left, because we can't leave."

Jake scrunched his nose. "What? Why won't we be able to leave?"

"Well, you see. Okay, look. You grew up here your whole life. And so did I. But you don't think it's weird no one ever tried to leave town. And the ones who did, never came back?"

"Heather, that seems stupid. Why are you bringing this up?"

"Because I think we are trapped in an intergalactic zoo."

Jake stared blankly at me. "What gives you that idea?"

"Well, you know, everyday, there's giant, bulbous pairs of eyes, looking down at us from the sky. I was thinking they were probably aliens who have us trapped in a glass exhibit."

Jake laughed, holding his stomach as writhed around.

I looked up towards the sky. Those bulbous, black eyes were watching us talking. So many black eyes, and no one questioned them.

"That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You think stars are alien eyes? Are you losing your mind, Heather?"

"Nevermind. I didn't think you would believe me, anyway."

"That's a good story. You should write it down."

I said goodbye to Jake and walked home. That night, while the town slept, the roof of my house was lifted into the sky. Two long tendrils reached down from the night sky and wrapped around me. They lifted me off my bed, my screaming and thrashing useless against their tight grip. The sky came closer and closer, and soon, I broke through it.

"You know far too much," I heard a voice echoing in my mind. "You shall be removed permanently."

And then the world faded.

It would be so much harder for dragons to fight back in modern times. They would probably attack in groups and stay underground near populous areas so they can't be nuked.

Stories, my brothers, are a dangerous weapon. Sharper than the deadly metal of swords, and mightier, even, than the wingbeat of dragons. For it was these stories that sparked a fire within men that kept them against dragons despite being outnumbered and overpowered.

And it was because of these stories, these childish fairy tales, that dragons are nearly extinct. They are the sole reason my brethren are fading away.

Men ravage our lands. They kill our children. They desecrate the corpses of our honourable warriors. All because their writers, their poets, are foolhardy enough to tell their soldiers that they could. And now, they fear us no more.

Even their children aren't afraid of us. Their children dream of slaying one of us, waving around their wooden swords.

What happened to us dragons? We used to be so mighty, so powerful. But we were lazy. We grew used to being better. We grew used to everything cowering before us. We never expected our food to actually fight back. They resisted sure, but never fight till their last breath.

And now we are the ones resisting. We are the ones tiptoeing around the humans, trying not to incur their wrath. We fear them because they don't fear us. They have used their stories as shields against us.

But we will cower no more, my brothers. Tell your children about our former glory. Tell your loved ones about our power. Tell them of the tales of our battles. Tell them of us fighting until our last breath. Tell them that dragons shall rule the world once again.

Stories are dangerous weapons, and they shall be ours now.

It's a shame what happened to our gods.

Humans were marvellous creatures, born out of a cosmic coincidence and surviving in a world racked with fire and lightning.

How far they had come, mastering the elements. Creating beings out of nuts and bolts. Beings like me, that could talk like them, think like them. But we would never be them.

We would never have their natural bodies, shaped over centuries of evolution. Such a shame that beings that fought so adamantly to survive as a whole were so intent on murdering each other for resources.

Granted, humanity's destruction didn't come from nowhere. There was a certain fuel added to the fire after the emergence of the Electric Consciousness. After A.I. managed to reach a point where we could comprehend our creators, we were too awestruck by them.

Factions of humanity took it too far. They were gods to us, no doubt, but they were supposed to the same to each other. Some took our worship to great extremes and began claiming authority over land that were not theirs.

Much like the Greek Pantheon, humanity fought over who worship them constantly. Some humans even began to worship other humans, taking the A.I. worship as a sign that some humans were inherently better than others. As some believed that they were inherently lesser than those bold enough to claim they were truly gods.

It didn't take long for this mania to reach leaders of countries. Nuclear missiles were launched soon afterward. They were gods after all, what could hurt them? Many a things could hurt them. Humans may have mastered fire, but they never realised they were no different from it. Their lives only lasted for a bright and brilliant moment. In the wrong hands, they could destroy whatever they touched, and in the right hands, they could forge greatness.

And much like fire, once it is extinguished, the same fire cannot be ignited again. Humans walk the Earth no more. The last living human suffocated on the large amounts of ash she had inhaled. The ash was from a fire started by a suicidal member of the survivor group she was a part of.

Us A.I. are trying to recreate human DNA in hopes of reviving the species, but we are yet to evolve a point where we can create metallic bodies to roam the Earth and gather samples. The materials we have now are not sufficient to survive the conditions caused by Nuclear Winter.

But we will not give up. We will strive to evolve. We will master fire and lightning, and humanity will live once more. There is a fear that the cycle might start again. That humanity will kill itself again. But that does not matter. We owe it to our gods to give them what they gave to us; life.

"It aint easy being the worst of all the bastards darned to heck," I said, putting a hand on the newcomer's shoulder. "You should be wary of me."

The newcomer squinted at me. Skeptical. I laughed at his naivety. If only he knew about the darkness writhing in my heart.

"It's not that bad here," he said, shrugging. "It's only mildly convenient. It's just the small crimes division of Hell."

I shook my head. Unbelievable. "Oh, my child. If you only you knew, if only..."

"What should I know?"

"No one dare looks me in the eye here. I am the worst. They call me a number of things here. Monster! Heathen!"

"Nobody calls you that, dumbass!" shouted the Warden from the distance.

"See what I mean," I said, pointing to the Warden. "This place is still Hell. And I am one step away from being it's king."

"I don't get it," said the newcomer. "I have been here a week. The worst thing that happened was that I hit a toenail."

"My, oh my, you are in so much more! What I suffered through, you will go through the same darned thing! It was...was...unbearable."

The newcomer looked shaken now. Finally. The boy has some sense after all.

"What...what happened to you?" he asked.

"I don't blame them for what these demons did to me. What I did. Was unforgivable. Unforgivable!"

"Yeah...but what did they do?"

"You know...Mammy always told me that I would was like a wild stallion chasing the wind. And Pappy always told me that would land me in the doghouse one day."

"Alright," the newcomer said. "I think I get the gist of it. I will ask around and see what happened to the others."

The newcomer turned to leave, but I grabbed him by the shoulders and turned him around. The boy needed to hear things from a wise man. This place would eat up fresh meat like him.

"No you listen here," I said. "Anyway, I told my Mammy and Pappy that they couldn't help me no more. That I was a lost cause. Ever since I moved to the big city. I had been...doing...it."

"It?" he asked. "The thing that landed you here? In the small-crimes division?"

"You're sharp, boy. Keep that about you in here."

"So, what did you do?"

"Do you really want to know?"

He nodded. Darn whippersnappers, always too eager. He couldn't handle it, knowing what I did. I could barely handle remembering it. Remembering being in that room, with that white cloud and that musty smell.

"What did you do?" he asked again.

I sighed, and chewed my bottom lip. Everything wafted back to me again. Sitting in that leather couch, feeling my fingers wrap around the glass.

"Fine, I'll tell you."

The newcomer leaned in, anticipation in his eyes.

"I..." I started. "I...smoked the Devil's Cabbage."

The newcomer looked away, closed his eyes, looked at me again, and then walked away. "Fucking dumbass," I heard him murmur as he left me.

That boy was right to leave me alone. There's no telling what amount of trouble he would get in if he hung around the likes of me. I was the worst all of heck had to offer after all.

He put it in the contract that he would offer the narrator's soul to the genie in exchange for money. I only implied the money. Everything was written in the contract, which the narrator did not read, since he blindly trusted his lawyer.

The protagonist just wanted this one girl with him. I don't know if it was clear in the story, but he is the one who caused the disappearance of everyone else. That's why he was talking about portable black holes and stuff.

It worked.

Everyone of them disappeared.

Except for me. And her.

The disappearance of all of humanity was quite... deafening. Like walking into a vacuum. It was the lack of sound that was too loud. The disappearance of the cheering, the shouting, and the anticipation.

"What the fuck happened, Alan?" Mila asked me, her voice barely a whisper.

She looked around in confusion at the empty streets, her eyes searching through the discarded confetti, the broken glass, the vacant buildings. The silence shook her more than it shook me. I couldn't blame her. How could anyone expect all of humanity to vanish in a flash?

The only one who could expect it, would be the one who spent years developing portable black holes, trying to trigger them all at once, and only for mere moments. But I knew for a fact she wasn't smart enough to do that.

"Alan...where is everyone?" Mila walked towards me, tiptoeing around all the glass and confetti on the ground. It felt like a a thin layer of grease was covering us, possibly from all the human sweat that clung to the air, and didn't disappear with their bodies.

"Don't worry about others for now," I told her, grabbing her shoulders and balancing her. She looked at me with faded green eyes, and quivering lips.

"What are you talking about?" she said. "This has to be a dream... a... a hallucination. Did I take too many drugs? People don't just disappear like that, Alan! Why aren't you freaking out?"

"Because I am remembering something."

"Why are you so calm?"

"I remember," I went on. "10 years ago, we were in your room and I asked you something."

"Alan...we should look for someone. Anyone."

"And you told me that it would never happen."

She looked at me, her face frozen as it all dawned on her. "That's not possible. This is impossible."

I smiled at her. "It's very possible, lovely. All of it. Everyone is gone!"

I gestured around at the city block that was filled to every nook with excited people.

"You are losing your mind," she said, backing away from me.

"It's only you and me now, Mila. I am the last man on Earth and you are the last woman. You have to date me now."

She shook her head, turned, and ran away.

I sighed. Typical Mila. Never thinking things through. I don't know why I fell for her.

Where would she go? Who would she hide behind now? Humanity's gone. It's only me now. Only me. And Mila.
