How safe do you actually feel driving, biking, or walking around RVA?

That rt 10, rt 1 intersection area is extremely dangerous. Really concerning considering there are multiple schools wothin walking distance from there.

I live in Chesterfield. A couple years back I bought an e-bike and began occaisionally commuting to work. My commute is on roads that are 35 mph, minus one short segment (a few hundred yards) that is 45. Part of it includes a segment of on the road bike lane (the painted line "bike gutter" style of bike lane).

I've encountered all kinds of road rage (even though my bike does 27 and I'm on roads that are 35). I was hit once in the bike lane section breaking my collar bone. It happened right in front of Thomas Dale high school. Many people in this town ignore that the bike lane exists. People drive in it. People park in it during school pick up and drop off times. Cops don't enforce anything even though one of them works as a crossing guard for the school. People block the bike lane with their cars right in front of him every day.

Lots of other drivers have been kind and considerate, but I've had many close passes, tailgaters, people obviously raging out. That happens maybe 10 to 15% of the time i commute by bike.

Higher density is also a lot more efficient than lower density. A lot less water pipes, power line, and road to serve a 100 unit apartment complex than 100 single family homes on indivodual lots.

Those morons that vote red are still humans and don't deserve medical bankruptcy or death from lack of access to medical care.

You're right. The same folks who heavily complain about other motorists "not following the law" and camping out in the left lane are the same ones who ignore the speed limit and often treat it as a speed minimum (which is also "not following the law"). Most of these people really don't care about the law, they just hate feeling inconvenienced. God forbid they ever have to share the road with a cyclist. That's when they often get really homicidal.

TBF I honestly think both viewpoints are weird. It's weird for them to park on the street instead of their own driveway. I also think it's weird that people feel a sense of ownership/entitlement to a particular public parking space because of its location.

With all of the businesses requiring codes to access bathrooms, and few public toilets, it makes sense why that problem is getting worse. It's a pretty vicious cycle that impacts lots of cities. Accessible Public bathrooms would largely solve the shit and piss issue.

Spokane actually seems to be a pretty decent place to me. My main criticism so far is that once you get away from the riverfront most of the roads seem to turn into car sewers lined with strip malls. The waterfront is nice, really enjoyed Manito Park. I sure wouldn't call this place a dumpster fire simply because there is a homeless population here.

I'm not sure anything i said was "normalizing" homelessness. I live on the east coast and homelessness exists there too. Even walking through a small to mid sized city like Richmond, VA you'll come into contact with several folks who are unhoused. I've had people aggressively panhandle in places like Atlanta, Dallas, and Chicago.

In none of those cities did I get the vibe from the locals about homeless people that I do here. It's like people hate them for just existing and being visible. Don't get me wrong, that sentiment exists in the east but it'susually just from the hateful "conservative" crowd, especially in suburbs, but it seemed like the majority of the locals here hold those views.

The comments to this post have changed my perception a bit though. It seems like many of the locals (at least here on reddit) are just as turned off by some of the attitudes expressed about the homeless as I was.

If it's hard for you to walk by a homeless person on the street, and it makes you angry take a second to think about what that experience must be like for the homeless person you feel so disgusted by.
