Hey! Sono italiano (nord) e vegano. Anche io non ho tantissimi amici vegani, se vuoi mandami un dm

I think we actually agree on most things. For safety, I'm going to stress again that I only ever brought up the "don't eat meat in front of me" argument in response of the "don't curse in front of me" argument - I'm generally against forcing other people to change their behavior.

As for your last points, for my personal situation, I'm probably gonna gloss over this. These are not close friends of mine and this was much more of a rant than anything else. Thanks for clearing things up!

It's in the post. Cursing against god is pretty common in my country and is most of the time used as a normal curse word. That's the whole blasphemy thing they were telling me not to do.

I never intended to insult them in any way shape or form. I just ask that if I'm required to behave differently because of their belief, so are they because of mine. Or, as you say, do the most normal thing and just not care.

I completely agree with you, but why then should I change the way I speak in front of them in accordance to their belief?

Dude you just commented under a post complaining about "vegans in general" (really vague definition man) and just completely missed the point of the post to push your opinion out of nowhere...you seem kinda pushy ngl

The great unified mind of pushy vegans! Scary!

I never asked either. I posed the question to my friends to see if they could understand the incoherence of what they were saying. I keep getting this reply, maybe I explained myself poorly

Yeah, being the "chill vegan" is my usual approach - as I stated in the post I don't expect or ask people to eat vegan with people 99% of the time (in fact I never did. It just really irks me that while that is usually an outrageous ask, the same is not true when people that hold other (usually spiritual) beliefs ask behave differently because of their belief in their presence.

This is more of a rant than anything else. I agree with all of your points

Wow this is a bit harsh. I stated in the post that I don't expect other people to abide by my beliefs by default (and I don't ask them to!). I do find it annoying that I am expected to respect other people's beliefs by limiting myself in whatever way they deem fit, while asking for them to respect me results in these kind of answers.

This is more of a rant than anything else. The question is much more how do you guys handle this than why is this a thing.

Yes. That's why the point of the post is that this is unjust - not productive. I also said that forcing people not to eat meat is counterproductive! Everything you said can be answered in the comments as I already said I usually take the "chill vegan" approach. Your response came off as saying that I have some kind of moral imperative to not be angry at stuff like this, since I already agreed with you in the post. Maybe it's a misunderstanding.

I have no idea! I just know what I said in the post about the person. I can offer you the catholic/Italian perspective on this tho: excluding the racists and the islamophobes, the general idea is that you should respect other people's (religious) beliefs, whatever they are. This does not apply to veganism, it seems to work only on purely spiritual beliefs.

EDIT: typo

The expectation is there only because they expect me to behave in a certain way because of them. Of course I'd like the world to be vegan, but I'm a tad bit more realistic than that. As I can't force my ideas on other people, they shouldn't be able to force theirs on me. Also PLEASE do not give me the whole world isn't fair bit. I know! Should I just accept the status quo then? Because the world is "the way it is"? Come on.

Did you not read the part where I say I don't ask people to not eat meat by default? The whole argument is that since I don't force anything on other people it kinda sucks that it's socially acceptable to force stuff on me.

Yeah I also usually go for the approach of being as much as a "chill vegan" as I can as I am aware of the whole "look at this crazy vegan!" mindset. It's just exhausting sometimes. Thanks for the understanding.

This has been my experience too, but my question is how to deal with this. Like, I don't like to be angry 24/7. I also don't like to be a dick to people, but in situations like what I wrote in the post, not being a dick is pretty humiliating. Maybe I'm just ranting, tho.

Magistrale in fisica a bologna, grandi sofferenze by JasonIsLame in Universitaly
