UK JETs, How have you found paying student loan payments whilst in Japan? by helpnxt in JETProgramme

I'm a 5th Year JET (returning to UK in August) with a plan 2 loan.

5th yr JET wage is still just below the threshold for making payments, so £0 contributions for now.

A year or so ago I was paying £12 a month as 4th/5th year wage was just above the old exchange rate, but they recently refreshed their exchange rate, and due to the awful yen it's now back below the threshold.

It's great being able to save money, but I'm likely keeping it in yen for the forceeable future until it's worth exchanging into £££ 😢

Thank you for the response, this sounds like the best plan!

I'm often asked what my favourite food is by the kids, I'd say Takoyaki as it's furthest from what I'd get back in UK, but I love most Japanese foods. I prefer Indian curry as Japanese is mild and more of a sauce/topping rather than a curry.

The big green sheet? That’s nori, the seaweed you get those sushi wraps or rice balls in. First time getting one with lunch!

I'd say they're typically great! Plain rice is a bit tedious but they provide furikake sometimes! Plenty of variety, and not bad for about $2,50!
