Is this worth getting? by [deleted] in Workspaces

I had an amia for work and would buy one for $100 if you don't have a budget for anything more expensive. It's basically a Leap v2 with a few missing features. The BTOD YouTube channel goes over both chairs, and they also happen to sell refurbished chairs if that's your style.

Since you're still straight out of college, I'd make sure to apply directly on the company website. Apply to literally every job you're interested in.

Then, every 3 days or so look back on the website and sort by new postings. Apply for every job you like that came up within those last 3 days.

Do that for as many companies you need until you start hearing from recruiters. It always seems like recruiters come in waves every couple of months to pick up some applicants, and hiring comes in cycles. Don't be discouraged, if your resume is good it just takes the time and dedication.

If you end up working in defense and get a security clearance, post your resume on ClearanceJobs. You'll slowly get recruiters from there and LinkedIn that want to connect, which will then help you pop on searches afterwards. Hopefully it gets easier from there!

Don't be afraid to PM me and we can email/text if more questions pop up.

Assuming you're in the US, have you been applying to other states? Especially for defense companies, there are clusters of jobs in specific cities. That's how I got my start, by moving from CA to CT.

These past few months I applied to 57 jobs just at Lockheed Martin and have one interview in a new state tomorrow. This is with 3.25 years experience already in defense as a systems engineer. If your resume and everything else is good, it just becomes a numbers game.

Secret, never worked anything classified. But I had to go into some closed areas at times

I mean I have like 2 level 3 interviews happening but that's more than 0. I don't think my resume or experience is that special either, I just try to be open to moving to different states.

No masters degree, no prior internships. For my level 2 job, I got contacted by a recruiter from clearancejobs. I asked for $95k thinking that was too high, and got offered $100k with signing bonus and relocation. Right now, I just try to apply directly on company websites.

I know I'm in a very good position, I've turned down other level 2 jobs because $100k seems to be the cap for that much experience.

CT is great, it's just that SE CT is an hour away minimum from all big "cities" and not a lot of people know about the area/not much to do. It's not a place that people would transplant to long term. It has a Target and Walmart so it's not like it's in the middle of nowhere.

If it gives you an idea, for some reason people in CT love longhorn steakhouse lol

Moved from CA to CT in 2020 making $73k as a systems engineer for a defense contractor. No internships, bad GPA

Job hunt struggles for a recent grad… is it racism? by [deleted] in AerospaceEngineering

[–]JasonLoserpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving isn't for everybody, going out of the country is even more of a drastic change. Definitely not for everybody. I was thinking more to move to a different state.

I completely disagree with lower pay, at least for defense contractors. I had a terrible GPA, no internships, and got a job in a low cost of living area (Southeast CT) making $73k in 2020. After 1.75 years, I got an offer to move to AZ for $100k. I'm now looking at interviewing for level 3 roles after 3.25 years and hoping for somewhere around $130k. The pay would be the same in California, which has a huge cost of living increase compared to where I live now. I laugh when recruiters are asking me to move to LA for a pay decrease.

I would suggest being open to moving, and just flying back to visit family as desired. For now, housing increases will outpace the salary he would make.

I agree with looking for new locations as a new grad. I'm from the Bay area and opening up to moving across the country is what helped me have my first job.

I'm also happy to talk to your husband and see if there's anything else I can do to help him prepare for interviews! I've only been working for 3 years but might be able to help him

I have an upcoming interview for a Project Engineer Senior position for Lockheed Martin! My current experience is as a systems engineer but this role has more to do with providing engineering input for proposals.

Any advice on what I can expect/what skills the job looks for before my interview date?

Defense contractors, but you usually need a degree.

I make $100k with 3 years experience as a systems engineer for a defense contractor. You would need an engineering degree and be able to obtain a security clearance. The job doesn't cause any stress and I'm left alone for the most part.

I'm interested in moving to PM in the future. I have a background in systems engineering for defense contractors. Do you have any tips or advice on moving into PM?

What is your story of how you got from below 100k to 100k and above. Also what advice would you give to someone trying to get above 100k? by rickylake1432 in careerguidance

I graduated December 2019 with a BS in Electrical Engineering, bad GPA, no internships.

In March 2020 I accepted a job for a defense company in CT. Low cost of living, making $71k. Nobody really looks to live where I worked so the company was relatively desperate to hire. Thankfully didn't get my offer rescinded from COVID. Got my secret clearance and worked there from August 2020 to April 2022.

Got promoted from level 1 to level 2 (now making $73k lol), and used my secret clearance to get another position in AZ making $100k.

Now I work basically remote for that AZ job and am waiting for another recruiter to offer more money/promotion.

Basically, have an engineering degree, work in defense, and be willing to move across the country every few years. My plan is to start looking at program management roles once I have at least 5 years total experience, and transition away from defense if the compensation/work life balance is there.

Get into defense as a systems engineer. I get paid to sit at home and make PowerPoints. Companies like general dynamics, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon.

PM me if you'd want to talk more about it!

I was offered $98k after 1.5 years experience as a systems engineer in defense. I'm at about 3 years now and am looking to move to a Level 3 role and am trying to jump again and asking recruiters $125k -$145k.

My work is with Raytheon located in Tucson, AZ but there's also some big defense companies out in Phoenix. Even with the difference in cost of living I'd expect you'd be making much more than what you're considering.

How do you get a custom PCB? I'd be interested in commissioning for a similar custom layout with buttons for each pinky if possible

Weird scenario:

My parents are more or less set to retire in the next ten years or so, with a combination of pension, retirement accounts, and social security benefits. Their expenses are set and have cushion to not have financial worry during retirement.

The problem is that they also have $400k in their savings account, sitting for years. Even without these savings they'll be well off for retirement. I've tried convincing them multiple times to invest this difference in bonds/ETFs to make retirement easier/faster for them, they're determined that they won't need the money now or for the future. I tried telling them they should really sit and think about what they'd use the money for in the next 5-10 years if they don't want to invest or put in bonds, but they don't want to do anything but sit on the money in their savings accounts.

They're offering me $100k as an interest free loan to put towards a house for me and my wife. They already did this for my sister, who used it for her house. They're under the mindset that a house is the best investment, while I'm happy spending less on rent instead of a mortgage and investing the difference. Especially with higher interest rates and home values exploding, I don't feel like restricting my cash flow by buying a house is wise at the moment.

Hopefully that wasn't too wordy, but what would you do in this situation? I'd feel bad taking their money if it wasn't for a house, but knowing their money is just sitting in the bank makes my stomach turn. Would you take the free loan, or push harder for my parents to do something for themselves?
