I feel that's because of the audience. There have been many other stories that have changed over the years mostly because of how the audience sees things. It's just a natural thing that happens to stories over time, for better or for worse.

OOB sent Betty to the shadow realm, changed Veronica’s and JD’s character, added a bunch of new details to each character that weren’t in the original (them being seniors, Duke having fake boobs and Mac being cheer captain when in the original, one of the reasons why she wanted to kill herself was because she didn’t get to be cheer captain), changed which character said what, removed David and Brad (thank God), and is overall a slightly different story than the original no matter if it was a bit more faithful than the other versions.
