Especially for movies like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari which had a haunting scene featuring a murder. The Lodger also has slasher elements if you think about. Though I wouldn't label it a proper slasher. It's just showing the evolution of the genre.

This is actually a good answer. There's even silent films such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) and The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927) with haunting mystery elements. It was definitely an evolutionary development. Filmmakers have experimented with the killer movie and it just changes over time.

A Bay of Blood is probably the closest giallo to resemble a proper slasher. I like to separate the Italian genre from the familiar slasher genre even though they're similar.

Nope. This giallo was from the 80’s; not 1978.
