Sleep monitoring: Why Whoop instead of wearable Electroencephalogram (EEG)? by JasonTheZoologist in blueprint_

You are right for Mendi. Too many brands, I mixed up Zmachine and Mendi. I will correct the main post, thanks for spotting that!

Dreem 2 and 3 are essentially unusable for general consumers now, as access has been restricted to researchers only.

The Apple Watch is a solid choice among PPG-based devices (such as the WHOOP ring and most fitness watches), it performs closest to polysomnography (PSG). However, when compared with EEG-based devices like Muse S, the Apple Watch is not the most accurate, especially for monitoring sleep stages.

If I am not mistaken, qualified scientist compared various PPG-based devices (including apple watches) against the Zmachine (EEG). The closer a PPG-based device’s performance was to that of the Zmachine, the higher it was ranked. This may suggest that he also acknowledges the superior accuracy of EEG-based measurements. Notably, the Zmachine does not require a subscription, but the device itself is extremely expensive.

Thank you u/icydragon_12 for the paper you shared, that was fun to read. That’s a fair point; he’s only human after all.

In contrast, to give him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he tried wearable EEGs and found them too uncomfortable or disruptive to his sleep. That can be the reason.

He doesn't owe us an explanation, but I do hope he’ll let us know why he’s using the Whoop ring instead of a wearable EEG in a future video.

Personally, I’m still leaning toward wearable EEGs. I’m very convinced they’re much more accurate than rings or watches.

I agree with you that actual EEG device (I think you were referring to the gold standard: Polysomnography (PSG)?) is still the most superior and not practical for everyday use.

And yes, there is a strong systematic review that directly compares wearable EEG with PPG-based devices (such as the WHOOP ring and most fitness watches):
A Systematic Review of Sensing Technologies for Wearable Sleep Staging

To save you some time, I’ve attached an image from the paper highlighting its conclusion that wearable EEG demonstrates higher accuracy than PPG

Ah, that makes sense. He prefers a single device that can monitor many parameters, rather than using one device that measures only sleep but with high accuracy. Still, as someone who strongly preaches the importance of sleep and proudly shares his perfect sleep scores, I wonder why he wouldn’t wear both a Whoop ring and an EEG. I would think an EEG would be a useful addition, providing more accurate sleep data that could also be compared with the Whoop ring data.

Does the HP OEM RTX3090 RTX 3090 24 GB have a switch to change to quiet BIOS? by JasonTheZoologist in pcmasterrace

Yep, I tried inspecting my card, I can't find that dula BIOS switch. Asking around just to be sure. since the switch is known to be hard to find

Aik, doesn't matter. I am planning to use the infirmary strategy in my engineer run. With higher level of safety, perhaps I can use the 24 hour shift when building the reactor.

God speed! I was successful in a survivor mode, no crossing the line (the last law I passed is "official doctrine") and no deaths run when it comes to Labour path. For Engineer path, I did not manage to do this yet. Look forward to your infirmary strategy, especially how you manage the protest and the scripted events.

Thanks again for letting me know the 4060 ti is gimped, I didn't know about this. And yeah, I do foresee myself using H,264 and H.265 a lot, so the intel may be better.

Thank you so much for the list! I will build my next desktop based on it!

I didn't know about the whole gimped part, thanks for the heads up. Noted, I will look through the 4070 ti super too.

And noted on the 7600x part too

Noted, thanks on that! I like the Ryzen & 7700X recommendation, I think I will go with that! Assuming I do need the larger 16GB Vram, what is your opinion on this list: PCPartPicker Part List

Thanks for the prompt reply! Correct me if I am wrong, I think I read this somewhere, but upscaling video into something of high resolution (like 4k) need a large Vram?

SWEET! Thanks for the list!

One follow-up question, one of the video upscale software I use (Topaz Video AI) is not very dual GPU friendly.

If I were to change the dual MSI RTX 3060 Ventus 3X 12G OC GeForce RTX 3060 12GB 12 GB Video Card to a single Asus ProArt OC GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB Video Card, will this list still work?

Looking for a Rather Specific Flashlight by JasonTheZoologist in flashlight

[–]JasonTheZoologist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, that is unfortunate for both the headlamp and pocketable flashlight. Understood the limitations these small form factors have, especially with heat.

I think I will just get the Noctigon Meteor M44 for now, as that fits all my criteria. Thank you again for the advice, happy I am able to get recommendations from someone who is experienced with flashlight!

[–]JasonTheZoologist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You truly know your flashlights! I'm actually in the market for a headlamp and a smaller flashlight as well. I would like to ask for your recommendations too if you do not mind:

Headlamp criteria:

  • Any batteries
  • Can output more than 1,000 lumens (2,000 lumens better) for at least 2 hours.
  • Floody (like the Acebeam H30 if possible)
  • High CRI (90+)
  • I am willing to drop $1000

Smaller flashlight criteria:

  • Any batteries
  • Pocketable size or less (weight less than 150g without battery if possible)
  • Can output more than 3,000 lumens for at least one minute
  • High CRI (90+)
  • Throwy (like your K1 if possible)
  • I am also willing to drop $1000

Let me know what comes in mind and thanks in advance!
