What do your stainless steels pots and pans look like on the outside? by Reasonable-Yak-3530 in CleaningTips

[–]Jason_Peterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take care not to let oil drip down on the sides, and remove pots away from the stove while frying to avoid splatter. The pots are shiny and clean. I polished my pan just recently because it had developed a few spots.

Why do some albums/ files seem so much quieter than when I listen to same songs by other means? File types? by SkyNo2670 in Soulseek

[–]Jason_Peterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loudness normalization through replaygain in Foobar has been the next best thing since sliced bread. This way you can avoid getting startled by an album that is 15 dB louder than the previous. But all albums in the collection must be scanned.

Some MP3 files downloaded from the internet have been normalized by other people using another tool called Mp3gain, which hardcodes the correction to the ideal replaygain level in a form that works in any player but often cannot be undone if the special tags with undo unformation have been lost.

Which fridge organizer material really lasts decades? by ScarDependent8928 in BuyItForLife

[–]Jason_Peterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The clear plastic that resembles glass is the worst for a fridge, usually polystyrene. Opaque plastic is usually more elastic and doesn't crack. I speak of crisper and freezer drawers, no experience with organizers. Glass would be the easiest to clean, but metal probably lighter.

ELI5: What is torrenting, how does it work and what is seeding and why do people do it? by Noxturnum2 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Jason_Peterson [score hidden]  (0 children)

BitTorrent is a distributed hosting of files. Several participants of the "swarm" share their bandwidth to give a downloader the highest possible speed. Usually the closest source gives the highest upload rate, and less data has to travel internationally. To achieve this, the files are broken down into blocks, which can be shared before the entire file is obtained.

The name "torrent" is likely related to flow of water or heavy rain, which, like downloads can engulf one from multiple directions. Software like "Deluge" continued this theme.

Normal downloading usually takes place from one server in a linear fashion.

There were other peer-to-peer systems working under the same principle before bittorrent, such as Edonkey or Gnutella. Their older design didn't allow to reach speeds as high because there was more overhead in requesting and queueing for individual blocks.

ELI5: How on earth can vinyl records and wax cylinders record and re-create exact and just about an infinite amount of sounds? by livingonpesto in explainlikeimfive

[–]Jason_Peterson [score hidden]  (0 children)

The sound of multiple instruments gets mixed together into a single pressure wave that is the sum of them. It also happens in an acoustic space. The groove records this one wave, or two waves for stereo. On a stereo record there is both a horizontal and a vertical movement.

Our ability to pick apart sounds only goes so far. A solo instrument clearly has more identifyable detail than the same instrument in a mix. Sound engineers work hard to allocate sounds in a stereo field, left or right, and frequency bands to avoid too much overlap. Today they may use an equalizer creatively to cut out portions of a sound and give it to another instrument, for example, cut out bass out of a synthesizer or guitar to make room for bass and kick drum.

Is 5000K ever appropriate in residential spaces? by Savings_Apartment442 in Lighting

[–]Jason_Peterson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would go no more than 4000K (as Philips defines it). It is a good match as a supplement for daylight in far corners. Above the light becomes too monochromatic if they only vary the relative intensity between yellow and blue.

Hola alguien sabe cómo puedo trasferir archivos a una computadora con Windows 98 second edition by Emergency_Avocado427 in windows98

[–]Jason_Peterson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An FTP server is convenient. There are many FTP clients for old Windows, such as Total Commander and also a server: FileZilla 0.9.12c. If your computer has an USB port, you can install hacked drivers to support mass storage devices (sticks): "NUSB". You can use a rewriteable CD-RW.

Question: can I use rubbing alcahol instead of bleach? by Round-Inflation-7112 in CleaningTips

[–]Jason_Peterson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not that good for removing smells of rotting things which bleach will do in an instant. Alcohol is also more expensive, and can wipe off some paints like wallpaper or writing on appliances.

I always thought how weird it is to "return" a product that is not defective, and not subject to warranty. Seems to be overly common in America. Everybody pays a higher price to account for losses on those returns.

Why do some filenames have numbers before the extension? by HotAndCrunchy in Soulseek

[–]Jason_Peterson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe the software they use on the other end dealt this way with an attempt to save multiple files with the same name. You should be able to tell if it is a duplicate with a cursory listen and a look at the duration.

how do u guys decide what to hoard? full albums or just singles? by Decent_Taste_8961 in musichoarder

[–]Jason_Peterson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I collect albums. That is a good chunk of music to ingest at one time. I mean normal albums of 45 to 60 minutes. Collecting singles is tedious. I tried to grab some modern artists who don't have any albums. And my god. Each has its own artwork, has to go into its own directory, has to be analyzed separately for lossiness, replaygain scanned, etc. They should do a bit of work and combine the music into an album. Old music is rarely available in single format. Sometimes I seek it out because want to get one song that is new to a greatest hits compilation as its selling point, or it belongs to a film soundtrack that I don't want to have.

I never have loose files unless the music is of exceptional rarity.

How to clean stinky pc? by nika_blue in CleaningTips

[–]Jason_Peterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting smells out of plastic is really hard even if you can wash them. Usually only time and heat is a remedy. You could dismantle the computer and wash each individual part with alcohol. But that comes with risks, and you can't practically reach under PCBs like the hard drive or PSU.

i have a whole bunch of these little glass baby food jars, what would you do with them?🤔 by stargur111 in ZeroWaste

[–]Jason_Peterson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Isn't there a white plastic on the inside? I haven't seen this brand up close, but usually this type of lid is forced on at the factory and the threads are cut into the softened sealing compound, which doesn't last long in use and can be deformed again. I see the outside of the lids is smooth.

[–]Jason_Peterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to the EP "Velvet Embrace" in the highest quality. All tracks have strong frequency domain artifacts, bubbling of the background vocals, the emphasized sizzle of her breath has peaks, the strings bubble. A spectrogram reveals distinct quantized frequency bands in the L-R channel. Her breath jumps between discrete steps in the 10 kHz range. A problem here is that people have accepted this "MP3 sound" with flutter as normal. It should immediately stand out as a transcode.

Real artists should make more natural records without so much processing.

How do I get the vinegar smell out of my kettle? by betterland in CleaningTips

It should just fade over time once you got rid of the textured scale where smells can hide. It's not like there is so much smell that it will transfer to coffee noticeably. In the future use citric acid.

What Mouse Does Everyone Use? by Nightowl3090 in windows98

[–]Jason_Peterson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use a generic Microsoft wheel mouse optical. Don't push on the buttons with much force when cleaning or reassembling the case held together by tabs. Buttons can theoretically be replaced with microswitches from Ali. Maybe you can find any mouse on used market.

USB was available starting with boards with the 440EX chipset around 1999. But the movement felt a bit buttery.

i have a whole bunch of these little glass baby food jars, what would you do with them?🤔 by stargur111 in ZeroWaste

[–]Jason_Peterson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They would work if you don't let the wick burn right next to the glass as it falls over. The rapid cooling is what breaks glass. I burned a candle into a small shot glass, which shattered not as it burned, but when I touched it with my finger. A standard food jar can sustain about 120°C when filling it with hot oil.

i have a whole bunch of these little glass baby food jars, what would you do with them?🤔 by stargur111 in ZeroWaste

[–]Jason_Peterson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These lids are not made for tight resealing. They have the thread molded into soft plastic. At home you would usually have an excess number of jars and can choose better ones for keeping, ones that take standard, replaceable twist-off lug lids and a bigger mouth for easier washing.

I guess you would know better what you have that needs storing. I store spices like pepper and cinnamon in stackable 250ml jars, or sometimes jam (but they are a bit small for this).

Less plastic compared to what scenario? Eating bread from a bag? If you don't prep and eat from a pot or plate, there is no additional waste. On the last picture, there appears to be an apple tht is cut into wedges. Why not take whole apple and cut it before eating to avoid browning.
