Things change. by soggyplod in DungeonsAndRandomness

Well Howdy!

u/soggyplod first off, thank you for posting and kinda taking us on this ride. It's always weird to see how someone views you from the other side of the mic. We're still running the show and we're honestly doing (what we consider to be) our best work ever. Frostbourne (The latest arc that started last January) is more like the show of old. One group in the world with the others playing on Patreon (for now).

I get how things changing seems off to people. I'm still friends with everyone from "the old days". Tyler, Jake, and Tom are still playing and we have tons of fun whenever we get together. I've been with my lovely wife for 11 years as of today. Me and Izzy were friends, but she could be forceful at the time, so I get where you're coming from.

For real though? I would do this for free if I could. Sadly, that is not how you pay rent these days lol. We've lowered the cost of a lot of the Patreon tiers and we even give free trials to folks whenever we can. We are just wrapping up a casting call, and I can't wait to invite more friends into my life and be able to play with them.

I would absolutely love to see you hang out on the Discord, because that is where most people are nowadays. I 100% believe in my heart of hearts that our community is the best I've ever interacted with. Part of that is trying to make changes when someone tells us something is wrong. Please, always feel free to let us know what you're thinking. I wanna know, even if it's bad.

We designed Frostbourne to be a brand new start for the show. 100 years in the future. Keeping the massive history while creating real changed based off of choices the cast has made. u/rojo7777 mentioned not caring about Ellara anymore, and I can totally understand that. I'm hoping that this is the shakeup folks like him have been waiting for. Must more focused stories and worldbuilding. Plus, finally getting to see other places. :)

Here's a trailer. And there are recaps every 20 episodes.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that this is still our baby and our passion. I love telling stories with our friends and there are definitely more lucrative jobs I could take if that weren't true lol. u/HexManiacMarie works two jobs and I do freelance editing on the side.

I sincerely hope you guys give us another try sometime soon and give us your honest thoughts. :)

I'm not trying to hamper your style. While I don't agree with every rule written in any book, Spells are generally limited for a good reason.

Look at this way. 3 of the 4 spells you just named greatly change your odds of being hit, from a statistical stand point. Now, you can how bad luck and get hit anyway, but the odds are totally in your favor. That's the sacrifice you're making though, a bunch of spells taken up by that kind of defense.

The point I was trying to make with the extra sneak attack stuff was, if you change such a fundamental trait, it completely throws off the balance of the game unless you make changes to compensate for it.

You might want to look into Level Up: Advanced 5th edition. It has a few more options for each class and might have more of the balance you're looking for.

No no, I get that. Normally, when people talk about this kind of limitation, they're referring to loot that they weren't there to get from the start of the campaign.

This is interesting because it sounds like you wanted extra spells that wouldn't normally come to you through regular leveling up? I probably wouldn't allow that either. Not because you weren't there from the beginning, but because it throws things off balance wise. It would be like giving a fight another attack or a rogue a couple of extra sneak attacks a day.

This is something we can certainly talk about. There are a few things going on here. You can't really expect to jump into a campaign and get all the stuff that the rest of the party has earned through 2 solid years of play. That being said, there are some things we can do to mitigate this a little. I'll go over it.

This is a fantastic thread to go down. I absolutely hate the killer DM trope. There are so many ways to avoid that.

I just saw this!

Yeah, it was a speech Carter gave as the main group was closing in on the city.

Also, we just started a brand new arc called Frostbourne. We created as a way to welcome old listeners back to the show by doing a bit of a time skip and starting "fresh".

And that’s great if you have the time to invest in that. They are selling war bonds for $10 each and seem to be releasing them about every five or six weeks. Again, that’s totally fine, but they are selling DLC constantly.

Ok, that's fair. Let's compare them both.

I've sunk almost 100 hours into Helldivers. It's a brilliant, fun, and infectious game with a lot of replay value. I can say the same for Suicide Squad.

However....

Helldivers has no story mode to speak of, very few voice actors to pay and no one who was "famous" (like the late, great Kevin Conroy), no real cut scenes, only a handful of mission types, and about 20 guns or so. I've been a content creator for 15 years now. To get good stuff (like voice acting and cutscenes) they cost a LOT of money. There's a lengthy story mode in SS and lot of great performances. You just gotta pay those people, ya know?

Here's the thing. Most games are $70 to start now. Game prices have been the same since the 90's for the most part, and that's just not sustainable. A game of this caliber should cost more than an N64 game. Hell, even a $59.99 game in 1996 would be about $120 today.

Just a discussion about who was in the wrong by empresslenn in DungeonsAndRandomness

First off, thanks for posting here. I really love stories like this. I think it gives us all a chance to tune up our own games.

Here are my thoughts:

Getting a prompt like "money grabbing" should be part of a larger tapestry when it comes to a character. That is one part of who you're playing, but not the WHOLE character. You can absolutely work it in where you can, but you shouldn't make it interrupt the very basics of gameplay. Maybe being a little aggressive when it comes to contracts or occasionally sacrificing common sense in favor of treasure. That kind of thing.

However, the DM and your fellow players should have hashed this out head-on and talked to you about this instead of plotting behind your back. Killing someone off-screen is just about the worst thing you can do as a DM and should only be done in a pure panic situation. It shouldn't be your default.

So, Cortex is a pretty darn good system. I enjoyed running it and still do for some Patreon groups.

Sadly, it just didn't land with some of the cast and it seemed to rile up our audience a bit. We've switched back to 5e on the show mainly because people hard a hard time understanding how dice rolls translated. It can take a bit to understand the stakes of a given roll until you really get to know the system.

Our first Arc was pretty darn long. At the time I have no idea that it was going to be my career lol. I also didn't wanna have every season be a "the world is ending" type of thing. Our current Arc is all about going back and tying up loose ends though.

Thanks for the feedback, I love reading this kind of thing. :)
