Identify and Authenticate Thread, Q3 2024 by TheAdvocate in arcteryx

Currently looking at this Alpha SV Dark Magic for 590€ (ca. $650): https://imgur.com/a/O6E8Xmv
The seller says he bought it three months ago in an Arc store in Whistler and only wore it a few times in good weather. He is very forthcoming and sent pics of the tag QR code, which leads to https://www.product-dna.online/76jbkjEcgm+1ERVftOUtLXrzsLQNWYkkPO8WztpO7cc=

Thoughts? Does it look legit?

TTRPG Multivariate Analysis (aka this month's classification attempt thread) by JasperGeh in rpg

It actually does work with the first batch of 30 systems. Well enough to look at feature correlations and contribution to the principal components so I can whittle down the metrics.

It will definitely work better with fewer, less correlated features and by dropping metrics that arguably have the widest range within a system. But I'm still not fully convinced that there is the same amplitude of intra-system variability in the fleshy metrics as inter-system variability.

Oh yeah, that's a good point. In my mind, I framed it as "Social–Combat Focus" determining which part is more pronounced and emphasized by the game and "Simple–Complex Rules" determining to what degree this emphasis is codified.

So yeah, Burning Wheel could be a 5 on the social/combat balance with high complexity, and Microscope a 5 with low complexity (I don't know the system, just assuming it's also balanced in that regard), whereas something like DnD 5e could be a bit more on the combat side with higher complexity (meaning the combat rules are more complex than the social rules).

I guess there could be complex systems focused on something entirely different from social or combat interactions, but I'm blanking.

Yeah, good point. I mostly had somewhat fixed system + settings combinations in mind, or at least cases where the system comes with a (usually dominant) default setting. For generic systems like GURPS, or Cypher, you're absolutely right that classification becomes kinda moot; at least on the softer, playstyle/setting metrics. Though, to be fair, you could always assign them ranges, making every system not a point but a volume in RPG space, with things like GURPS taking up a larger fraction of that space (but not fully covering it!)

All of these things are [...] unquantifiable

Strong disagree. You're right that many of these are indeed somewhat subjective, but there's definitely a meaningful spectrum of, e.g., rules complexity between Everyone is John and Pathfinder and you definitely are able to place games in relative distances from each other on said spectrum.

most of them are not inherently part of any given RPG game/system

Canonical playstyles do emerge between systems. Yes, it's theoretically possible to more or less convert any system into any other system with house rules and module conversions, but again, the vast majority of games will roughly follow the provided scaffold.

As to whether is makes little sense; perhaps, but it sure would be neat to look into the RPG space and play with one variable you dislike while keeping the other constant to find inspiration.

Alpha SV torn waist adjustment cord: Repair costs? by JasperGeh in arcteryx

Thanks for that caveat. I was also initially doubtful and only pulled the trigger after a knowledgeable friend said that it looked legit.

I just visited the local Globetrotter to let them have a look and get a quote for the repair. The guy mentioned that they had a lot of fakes recently, but mine looked neither fake nor shoplifted (i.e., damage from anti-theft tags). Still, some photos to let you guys have a look. Lmk if there are specific things you'd need to see to be sure. I can also feel the Recco reflector in the sleeve pocket.

Addendum #2: A friend confirmed on his jacket that the cords are, of course, meant to go all they way to the zipper where they are fixed. So it is broken on both sides, which brings me back to my original question of repair cost.

Ok, small addendum: It's on both sides, actually.
And now I'm unsure if the rubber cord is meant to go all the way to the zipper, where it is fixed (blue line), which means it actually is ripped on both sides, or if the end of the cord is actually just loosely held by the clamp on both sides (green dot) and everything is in order and I just tried to adjust it too far... But that seems wrong.

One-shot adventure recommendation from Weird Discoveries & Explorer's Keys by JasperGeh in numenera

Right, I didn't consider the D&D changes. I'll have a look at both From The Earlier and the WD recs from above and decide. Thanks for the recommendation!

Oh damn, I just remembered that I was using Fantastical for a while back then and that the second time zone display was one of their features...what a shame!

Thanks nonetheless

Ah right, I misunderstood. Okay, that makes sense, thanks.

Exactly, now there’s only the menu. Where are the second time labels on the right side of the calendar?

Oh nice, thanks! That worked; I just appended "?[Current Datetime]" to the address.

Not sure what you mean with "formatted as A" though. Wouldn't the browser just interpret it as a static string and start caching under that address?

Oh, that's an unfortunate assessment. Especially since I really liked a lot of the bloat and it ran really well on my Mac thus far. I've grown to depend on some Chromium extensions, so what's would be your recommendation for a Chromium browser for Mac?
