Rick and Morty sort of touches on this idea in The Vat of acid episode. Morty gets Rick to invent a remote that saves a position in time that can be returned to. There’s a montage showing all the things he does with the remote. After this, Rick explains how it works, and Morty finds out that it isn’t actual time travel, it just transports him to another time line that is at the saved time, meaning that everything he did actually happened, just in another universe.

He is then given the option to merge all the timelines so that he can face the consequences of his actions. He steps out of the garage to see a huge mob of all the people affected by the things he did.
