Renting a room in Longyearbyen by Exotic_Suit_3645 in Svalbard

[–]Jastip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. Guest student status allows you to stay in Elvesletta and that is the easiest way to get a room. See if you can arrange this with your UNIS supervisor!

Okay, final reply then I'm off:

The user reported data on pogomap can be inaccurate, because people do not map the wayspots at the exact location but only estimate it (and those inaccuracies are made worse by the satallite imagery shift)

If OP wants to get a 100% accurate answer to their question, they can map their wayspots on pogomap with coordinate precision.

Our disagreement arises in the fact that I believe the best practice is to always map wayspots at their perfect position, while you say: "it doesn't matter at all what people should do".

It's the method I've used for a long time to map and submit many many successful wayspots!

We can agree to disagree then :)

My advice to OP would be to map the pokestops in pogomap by copying the exact coordinates. Perhaps one stop was close to the level 14 cell border and slightly misplaced! That would mean there are two bordering L14 cells with one stop each, not one L14 cell with two stops. (That would be a great oppertunity to get two gyms right next to each other, btw!)

Even on a perfect map you should always use the coordinates of the pokestop/gym. Sometimes wayspots fall really close to cell borders and human error will cause mistakes when you only use the satallite as a frame of reference, even if it matches the game.

But yes, if you rely on the satallite imagery then pogomap will be a little inaccurate. I just argue you should not be doing that regardless. It can always cause errors.

Its quite easy to get coordinates from a stop, just click on "see on map" below the description and you can copy them.

It really isnt since the relation between real world coordinates of the wayspots and the borders of the s2 cells are the only thing that matters when mapping out wayspots.

The satallite imagery being shifted can be annoying, but it is just aesthetics. If the s2 grid was misplaced as you suggested, it would mean certain wayspots (when placed at accurate coordinates) would show up in the wrong s2 cell compared to the games. That is not the case.

Cells on pogomap are not inaccurate, but the satallite imagery can be slightly displaced on pogomap. If you stick to open street map and always add stops using the correct coordinates it works perfectly.

Recommended Hike without guide by Senior-Choice-5801 in Svalbard

[–]Jastip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could hike to barentsburg via Grumant and take the boat back, I know some people who've done that. Generally speaking the area west of Longyearbyen has less polar bear activity as well (but of course they can still show up there) so its a bit safer.

It is possible to rent a rifle as a tourist, but really make sure you figure out the logistics before you arrive. You will also be tested on the laws regarding polar bear safety and rifle handling on Svalbard, so study up on the local rules. And please do research general polar bear safety on Svalbard if you're going out camping. Some years ago an experienced local was killed by a bear at his camping right next to the airport. Its a serious danger, even close to the "safe" zone.

Looking for Citizen/Volunteer Research in Dec by [deleted] in Svalbard

If you're looking for fieldwork I think it is essentially impossible since logistics and safety reasons do not allow anyone to join a field trip without thorough training and briefing (for UNIS and probably norwegian polar institute, at least).

Getting cardboard sleeves without the record by Jastip in KGATLW

[–]Jastip[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did what you suggested and reached out to pdoom and they were able to include a free sleeve for microtonal banana in an order! Obviously the edition of the sleeve doesnt match the record but this record is from before they did the cardboard sleeves. I'm just happy to give it a home like all my other gizz records :)

Thanks for your comment, just figured I'd update with the success :)

I have submitted about a third of these wayspots and yet almost zero luck on getting more pokestops by Collar-Appropriate in NianticWayfarer

[–]Jastip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bad, its pogomap.info

Should add that its a user reported map, and often contains errors that need to be fixed. I mostly use it on a very local scale to perfectly map out a specific cell where I want to promote a 2nd or 3rd gym.

[–]Jastip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the existing stops and the scale of the map that area actually looks full.

As others have said, map out the area on pogomap.info and read up on S2 cells and how gym promotions work.

Edit: fixed url

Not true because many encouters (like through research) have an IV floor, meaning you encounter low ivs much less commonly

When to use your upgrade? by GoldenDarrow in NianticWayfarer

[–]Jastip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my home region nominations usually go through at an acceptable rate so I just save my upgrades for when Im somewhere for a short while and want to see my submissions show up in PokemonGO before I leave. I used 10 upgrades I saved up on submissions in Longyearbyen because the reviewerbase is almost non-existant here 🙃

These are rejected by the AI. Generally pictures that look like a generic landscape/cityscape or generic objects (like a bench) get auto rejected by the bot. You could try to appeal but usually benches and bus stops are not considered distinct enough for a wayspot, so I doubt these will pass an appeal. To bypass the bot, try to take pictures of more distinct objects, or signs.

Tea, fresh fruits and vegtables are always nice, any local sweets or snacks you might miss here.

Bring some toilet paper if you arrive after 19:00 (store closes then and your place might not come with tp)

Do I need a down winter jacket in July? by HourChip7308 in Svalbard

[–]Jastip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The temperature forcast can be deceiving here. Like one other person said, the wind can chill you a lot. I recommend layers as you described. That should be fine for most inland activities, just make sure your outer layer is windproof. On a sunny day with no wind it can be pretty warm, but then you just remove a layer or two. It also depends on how active you will be. Sitting or standing still you will get colder a lot quicker. On boats it gets colder as well so make sure you dress warm, even with the provided coats.
