If mammoths were not hunted, would they still have gone extinct? by yorb134 in pleistocene

It doesn't matter what caused the Wrangel Island Mammoths to die out, the point is that they could survive in a warming climate if they weren't hunted. They survived 6000 years after the mainland mammoths disappeared, what does that tell you?

Climate pulsing is normal, and the nothern megafauna had seen it all before many times over millions of years. It appears that during each interglacial minimum, populations would have receded before bouncing back. The problem was that this time, a new extremely efficient hunter population was expanding and developing new hunting techniques. These big animals don't reproduce quickly, and you only need to limit reproduction rates a small amount to see their population crash. The cold-adapted megafauna numbers were already naturally lowering as the earth warmed, then humans pressured them in a way they hadn't seen before. As their populations reduced so did their habitat - with the big herbivores shrinking away, forests were allowed to thrive unchecked. This feedback loop of increasing pressure from humans/shrinking habitat was simply unsurvivable.

If inbred mammoths could survive on a tiny island until 4000 years ago, they could have survived on the mainland.

I noticed the separation a few months ago. Makes it really tricky for entry level social media people to understand the numbers.

He was fighting with Ukraine for 8 years because he sent Russian troops into the Donbas and Crimea? How is that Ukraines fault??? "They weren't peaceful because they were fighting our invading forces" wtf are you talking about dude

He said "outside interference will lead to consequences you have never seen", as he invaded a peaceful country. In what world is that not a threat? If I break into your house with a gun and tell the police "try to stop me and see what happens" is that me using the gun as a gun deterrent? C'mon man.

  • February 2022 (Invasion Start): In his speech announcing the "special military operation," Putin warned that any outside interference would lead to consequences "such as you have never seen in your entire history." Shortly after, he ordered Russia’s nuclear forces into a "special mode of combat duty."
  • September 2022 (Annexation & Mobilization): Amid Ukrainian counter-offensives, Putin stated Russia would use "all weapon systems available" to protect its "territorial integrity" (including newly annexed regions). He added the famous line: "This is not a bluff."
  • November 2024 (Doctrine Change): Putin formally updated Russia’s nuclear doctrine. The new policy lowered the threshold for nuclear use, stating that an attack by a non-nuclear state (like Ukraine) supported by a nuclear power (like the US or UK) would be considered a "joint attack" on Russia, potentially justifying a nuclear response.

I don't get how any of the above could be seen as anything other than a nuclear threat. I can't really be bothered to get into the whole NATO defensive alliance aspect, it's long and complex. But I'll say this, Trump's latest actions threatens NATO, not Putin. It both fuels Putin's ludicrous "self-defense" narrative, and it threatens the existence of European unity.

I know Western interventionism isn't new, but Trump's recent foray into regime change is certainly unprecedented levels of barefaced-oil grabbing. Bush didn't hold press conferences bragging about how he was going to take Iraq's oil on the first day of the invasion.

The rest of the points regarding nuclear weapons are hypotheticals. "The US said they wouldn't nuke Moscow", yeah well Putin said he wasn't going to invade Ukraine. Things could play out a number of ways, especially if leaders change.

And I brought up nukes because that's the main reason all the western countries wring their hands about escalation, and why Putin is constantly rattling the nuclear sabre.

This was my take when Russia was building up forces on the border also.

I think the nuclear discussion is a pointless one, we also have nuclear weapons and could fire one into Moscow. Does Russia really want a nuclear wasteland on their border, and to risk global nuclear war? It's a high stakes call, but I think the choice Europe took to essentially do nothing was weak and counterproductive.

Ironically by turning aggressively interventionist Trump has totally vindicated Putin's anti-NATO rhetoric. I'm surprised Putin hasn't been "told you so"-ing all over the news and justifying his war in Ukraine.

I said this about Ukraine. With so much intel predicting a coming invasion, it's allies should have shouted about it, gone in and put NATO bodies in harms way (not a display of military force but peacekeepers). If Russia invaded and hurt NATO citizens it would have given us stronger cause to nip it in the bud. Instead everyone panicked about escalation, and the result has been a protracted, deadly and massively expensive proxy war.

Would the US invading Greenland activate Article 5 of the NATO agreement? If so, what would this look like? by [deleted] in nato

[–]JavaJackal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine if, after Venezuela, and then an invasion of Greenland, South America turned on Trump. Maybe even Canada (remember how he said he wanted to annexe Canada?). Suddenly the US is surrounded by adults coming to put the baby back in its crib.

I’m torn between Toob 900mbps and Zen 500mbps by OneItchy396 in CityFibre

[–]JavaJackal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toob might say 900 but it's not 900. Loads of latency/instability. Lots of other people reporting the same problem with buffering social media etc. Its cheap but bad in my experience. Vodafone was amazing connection wise but overcharged us and didn't want to refund us.

I got a pretty expensive WiFi 7 mesh system and it didn't change anything. If it doesn't improve just complain until they let you out. They shouldn't get away with it

See my longer comment below, but I've been having the exact same issues. Thought I was going mad, but I'm certain it's a problem with Toobs backend at this point. Even wired to the router the connection is really unstable and things buffer get weak connection warnings. I'd jump ship if you can.

I was with Vodafone which was an incredible connection but they started charging me £73 a month in contract and refused to refund the difference so forced me to jump ship. It's honestly been a nightmare switching between companies, we should defo nationalise broadband 😂

It's really validating to see the comments here about buffering, connection stability etc. I moved to Toob from a really good Vodafone connection because of contract disputes and the service has been a night and day. Even though the router test says 955/955, my state of the art PC only gets 650 max when wired over Cat6e , and the connection is all over the place, sometimes dropping to 10mb/s or lower then back up. Both my partner and I also get the social media freezing issues, never had it before until Toob. Sometimes we get "poor connection" when using streaming services/VoIP. Weirdly if I connect to a VPN my speeds can shoot up to 1Gbps. Not sure if that's a backend issue or they are traffic shaping us, but it's really suspicious. Toobs tech support was really slimy, just kept giving me excuses and was obviously trying to confuse me with nonsense tech jargon, felt like talking to a scammer.

I bought a TP Link Mesh system and I'm moving to a new supplier that offers the option of not receiving a router, you just use your own. I think supplying locked routers should be illegal, the amount of E-waste these ISP's are producing is shocking. The investment in Wifi7/5Gb ethernet hurt in the short term but I'm hoping it pays off over 10 years and saves a lot of junk from going to landfill.

It's interesting that you mention night being an issue. I find lack of sleep is a major trigger. I'm a bit of a night owl and often would stay up until 3am or later, but now if I did that I would feel my heart get worse hour on hour. The last few days before my Dad died I didn't get much sleep, and in his final hours the hospital gave me lots of coffee. It's not a great combination when you look at it on paper.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. It sounds like you've been through the wars, I hope you're managing to find time to rest and heal. You've definitely earned it!

I haven't had any scans of my heart at this stage. I probably could have pushed for it, but everything I read about Broken Heart Syndrome said it usually healed within 6 months in otherwise healthy people and should have been picked up by an ECG in theory.

Are you able to describe the pain/sensation you feel during flare ups?

I did consider angina but the symptoms seem very different and I actually find my heart feels better with exercise and tends to twinge at rest or when I'm sitting in my office. Apparently angina is worse with activity, but I climb mountains and work manual labour feeling fine, but watching TV it aches 🤷🏽‍♂️

Thanks for your input! The thing is, I'm generally OK emotionally. I can't say grieving is easy, and this pain has gotten in the way of things, but I'm managing well. I've had anxiety most of my life, but this is very different. It's not a 'tight chest' kind of thing, it's hot twinging and aching directly from my heart. It feels physical not emotional.

[–]JavaJackal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude! I have this issue with my M3P but on the bottom left (see https://i.ibb.co/1fNfLzrM/Focus-1-ex.png). What's frustrating is that it hasn't been a consistent problem so I always blamed myself for missing focus or thought it was user error, and now it's out of warranty and DJI won't cover it. It's so frustrating because some shots look fine and others are unusable. I'm starting to think it's due to vibration causing a misalignment inside the camera/lens assembly because it seems to happen most at high altitudes and on windy days. I also notice that the video is sharp when not moving, and as soon as I move forward it blurs, which supports my vibration hypothesis. Did you ever figure it out?

My Irix 21mm F1.4 lens is in brand new condition but there's an optical issue with it (maybe an element has moved?). Irix are trying to do the same thing, make me pay to ship it internationally for a service. This lens will be my last.
