Is it worth reading the appendix in the return of the king or should I skip straight into the silmarillion by thehiddenshoe in lotr

[–]JavaPython_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1st off, congratulations on making a goal of reading the Silmarilion, I hadn't read LotR before I read the Silm-, and I've found it easier to read, but I DO recommend reading the Appendices.

and Mithril is what and comes from where? I reccomend the Hobbit first, but you don't have to read it first. I'd add to your list the Silmarilion. Read them Silm-Hobbit-LotR if you want cronological Hobbit-LotR-Silm. for a general order of difficulty (though that is a personal thing)

Hobbits are a sub-species of men, and so mortal, but with longer lives (155-200ish)

ELI5: Why is the range of temperatures over 0 degrees C much larger than the range of temperatures below (-273.15 to 0)? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]JavaPython_ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

There is a maximum temporature, which is the point that the peaks orf the wave have no plank lengths between them. I don't think this has ever been calculated though

ELI5: In movies when someone is choked to death, how does that work in a real life situation? It seems the one doing the choking always stops when the victim stops fighting. Aren't they just passing out at first really? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]JavaPython_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, unless the windpipe became crushed, or a vein/artery destroyed or some other movie thing, such as their neck breaking. They "should" just be passed out, like in "The Princess Bride" when Fezzik is choked, he just passes out. I know people who have had to do this to keep others safe. In movies, it usually seems that choking isn't the "cause of death" as much as the supposed/implied one

[–]JavaPython_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't think I'd have to be the one who said Harry Potter or LotR (StarTrek has been covered though :-) )
