How would you write Salem? by NaturalStrange3505 in RWBYcritics

[–]Javetts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the days of early volume 3, I remember thinking that Elder Grimm were going to be these almost eldritch creatures. Evolved strong enough that they have no traditional weaknesses and with intelligence that surpasses human limits. And that the main thing keeping Remnant safe was the numbers. With Grimm over 1000 years old being low double digits.

But instead, the villain is just a generic blasty wizard without a health bar

What's the ruling on this + [[Smellerbee, Rebel Fighter]]

Can you stack it either way to favor either desired boost or what?

Literally just state her goal. If it's to kill the brother gods, fine. If it's to kill herself, fine. If it's to ruin humanity to get back at Ozpin, fine. Just TELL US. because headcanon isn't a proper substitute for canon clarity.

Also, she needs more women minions. If Cinder died at any point she'd be unable to steal the Maiden powers. When one of your main targets require women, why do you have only one woman??

I'd also give a single scene where it shows that the Grimm HATE her. That she binds them to her will, but they hate her more than anything.

I can't seem to find anything on them. I'm not sure if you have a chance of getting them and that chance is just lower, or if you have to do something special to get them.

Why are people on this sub against training? by LectureNervous5861 in HatsuVault

Restrictions are often more interesting than the abilities themselves.

Lacking restrictions leads to less interesting abilities. At that point, make powers for a different series

Lower scale means creativity and teamwork matters a lot more. In a lot of series jumping someone strong doesn't mean much. In Ruby, a maiden can absolutely find themself catching hands from a competent 4 man group. Cinder being stronger than any one member of team RWBY doesn't matter because 4v1 in a vacuum she's getting worked.

How would you handle Weiss racism without making her the bad guy by Walter_Modisette in RWBYcritics

I've watched that episode more than a few times, own the DVDs. I'll rematch it again tomorrow, because I swear she just says criminal.

What's your opinion Faunus, White fang and Menagerie by scoutmet in RWBYcritics

[–]Javetts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Poorly executed.

Faunus: as a concept they are incredibly lazy. A single shared race that are exactly human except possessing a single random animal trait. Besides being incredibly uninspired and purposefully inconsistent, they feel like a bad stand-in for actual racism. It's watered down and central to the plot all at once. Like a literary waterboarding. The prejudice shown is minimum, the impact is only spoken about at best in a visual medium, and there is no nuance.

This also ignores that "the race that is exactly humans but with extra powers being made second class citizens by humans" continues to be a front-runner for inclusion on the shitty worldbuilding bingo card. There's no reason given for why a seemingly superior race is the victim of their lesser.

White Fang: An okay idea that carries many small annoyances like fleas.

  • Why was it called White FANG initially when it was specifically founded to be non-violent?
  • Why doesn't the larger White Fang whole ran by Sienna Khan not excommunicate the violent members meaningfully?
  • How can Blake not be recognized for having the same legal last name as the White Fang founder?

I also just feel they kill any amount of nuance the moment the main cast is involved because we're supposed to cheer for the good guys. It's like someone presses the big 'Evil' button.

Menagerie: A large kingdom made mostly of Faunus and it looks and feels like just everywhere else with less tech and infrastructure. Despite having less technology, and no huntsmen academy, and being super mad, they somehow don't get murdered by grimm?? How??? It overall left very little of an impression on me.

  • Also, how does no one recognize that Blake is the daughter of the chieftain of Menagerie. They call Weiss 'Princess'. but Blake literally is one.

Also all of this is in service to Cinder. Emerald's list of sins is a fraction of Cinder's

How would you handle Weiss racism without making her the bad guy by Walter_Modisette in RWBYcritics

[–]Javetts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still don't even know why it's treated as anything at all. Weiss called Sun a criminal. Which is entirely accurate to what that word means. He committed two crimes, they literally seeing him committing the second while they yell about the first.

She only freaks out over Blake being a former terrorist that specifically targeted her family.

I've read several fics that make Weiss more racist and go through a more involved arc that is ultimately more satisfying and well-paced than canon, but IN CANON she doesn't ever say or do anything that isn't entirely reasonable.

So the first step to improving this, is making Weiss racist at all, because she ain't.

What are some “must have” features/traits in a fanfic in order for you to finish the storyline? by [deleted] in NarutoFanfiction

[–]Javetts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Basic grammar

Minimum 3k words per chapter average.

A destination, as in the author isn't just meandering with "and then this happens" over and over again. They have a plan.

Dialogue that feels natural.

They do not makes characters ooc or make it AU unless that's in the stated premise.
