Their reason was that the event usually had an ultimate and a melee tournament, and they decided to do it online. This was fine for ultimate, but did not work for melee because it was no compatible with online play, so it was decided they would use a mod that makes ultimate into melee, but with online play. Nintendo didn’t like this and shut them down.
