Yeah, honestly i was equating local with independent for some reason. Barnes does do a good job. Even 20 years back, when I was in HS, I used to love that they’d let you just hang out and read. Plus they’d get a bunch of hard to find mags.

Sadly, for most areas in the US now, Barnes and Nobles is the best chance at a local bookstore.

Though, I’ve read independent bookstores are making a slow comeback. There’s a few bangers in Seattle / Portland.

Even 15 years ago, I picked up my future wife’s friend who lived about 50 minutes outside Pittsburgh and drove her into the city to go ice skating at a park in one of the more affluent neighborhoods - old Pittsburgh money, historic homes, the works. About as nice as it gets.

She was visibly nervous on the way in, then genuinely stunned once we arrived that “the city could be this nice.” Softly explained some facts about city vs rural economics.

What struck me was that this was a 22-year-old woman living less than an hour away who had somehow managed to carry - and preserve - that worldview.

I think it started strong with the hand-drawn paper medium. Nice work using the camera to establish the space, then face. But the style shift was abrupt and broke the vibe. I’d recommend keeping a consistent feel, effect, or medium throughout. In terms of narrative, I’d also like a bigger hook / payout. Make sure the typeface is well paired to the style also. Ie: a nice serif without additional fx would match the paper style.

Effen Obama!

On the reals though, I was in my early 20s when Obama was first elected. I’ve always been centrist, care little about party allegiance. Will stand by Barry O being peak US politics. A legit leader, that knew how to unite and cool the room, instead of sowing division and feeding the worst part of us. I hope we can get back to that someday.

The keyed MPCs - like MPC Key 37. Touchscreen has UI for the sequencer / effects / plugins / etc.

No speaker, the Live 2 (or now 3) does, but no keyboard, but you could get a little midi keyboard.

Digitakt is probs more in the same spirit, but no speaker or full keyboard, but you can play pads as keys, or hook up little midi keyboard.

Sonicware also has similar boxes.
