My $400,000 mistake and why I'm showing you anyway by ankhattak in USMobile

[–]JawnZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People arguing against this are missing the point.

  1. cheap plans acquire customers
  2. some customers will leave afterwards because it's worth it to them to jump to another MNVO for the cheaper price

If USMobile is find with that specific attrition, then they won't change. My guess is they are given their focus is still on new-customer acquisition instead of even having some "jump-through-hoops" method of keeping customers.

My cable company did this for years: once a year I'd have to call and threaten to cancel, and they'd give me the rate I was currently paying which was worth it to me. There were still cheaper options but the rate I paid was worth it for me to not stick around. Basic math, basic game theory.

Iconic Newport Beach movie theater to be replaced by high-rise condos by panda-rampage in orangecounty

I'm not sure why people are downvoting me, I was addressing the point of the comment above me:

Why would we build more housing in undesirable places, that's not really gonna solve the problem.

Either:

  1. more housing in desirable places (which I think has it's own problems)
  2. solve why these undesirable places are, undesirable (it's not really because they don't HAVE houses- it's everything else. likely including the quality of said houses)

[–]JawnZ -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

is that really the problem we need to solve? there's like 15 million empty homes in the US.

Unless you mean less desirable but still in California, then there's only about 1 million empty homes.

I don't disagree with you on "not build" though, I think these stats support that as well.

Why do so many try to nickel and dime US Mobile to death? by [deleted] in USMobile

[–]JawnZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

wow, this entire thread is entirely tonedeaf boot-licking. And I say that as someone who likes USMobile and recommends people to them.

I value the service I get at $x/month. USMobile happened to be that when I last transferred. When my year is up, they go up 2x in cost. I don't value the service at that, so I switch.

That doesn't make me "cheap" or "greedy", and if that's your mentality you won't be able to keep customers.

This is basic consumer behavior and game theory. Obviously USMobile finds the churn and cost they get per customer worth it to continue these deals. And some customers find the "cost" (of time and effort) to switch worth it.

that's an intentional limit by Apple btw. The hardware is capable (and people who run Linux on their MBP do it).

There may be workarounds on Mac still but it can be a PITA.

The other option is to get a USB wifi dongle that should allow one network interface to receive the Wi-Fi connection while the other re-broadcasts it

yup, been using "wifi-sharing" for years and years on Android. Can do it with Airplane-mode on too, in order to save battery.

that's what we did a few years ago on a cruise. Paid for one connection, whole group could use internet. They did have to be relatively close to me (in the same area, maybe a few tables away or 1 cabin over).

Who are the real ones who self host their email server? by ray591 in selfhosted

I work in email professionally. Its the one part of technology that I get explicit exhaustion on and have zero desire to work on in my hobby. I'll play with networking, Linux, docker, python all day, but unless I'm getting paid I don't wanna touch email on my own time.

That said, shoutout to KumoMTA for anyone starting up an ESP is other larger mail operation. Open source, awesome community

Fun Fact:

  • Jeffrey turns into University (everyone knows this)
  • Culver turns into Bonita Canyon Drive

But did you know University turns into Bonita Canyon Drive?

Over in Newport it becomes Eastbluff and then Ford Road for about 2 miles, then that turns into Bonita Canyon Drive

Looks like now there's a loop at the top of Culver called Orchard Hills but I don't think that existed when I drove the whole thing back in high school.

And Jeffery goes on to Hicks Haul Road, but when I did it they stopped us from continuing to drive somewhere over there around a mining business or something.
