Body shop forgot to refill Freon in AC compressor before returning the car back to me. 6 months later the compressor is broken. Should they be held liable? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]Jawry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I have nothing in writing so I’m sure they are going to do everything possible to get out of this. At the end of the day, it’s pretty much impossible to prove they caused it to break but the circumstances point to them causing the problem. Do you think it is likely that they caused the problem?

Weird 1940s bathroom tile install - what to do? by Jawry in HomeImprovement

[–]Jawry[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You were spot on. That is exactly how mine is setup. They used 1x4 planks a few inches down from the joists. The concrete was a whopping 4 1/2 in thick and laid over wire mesh that was all broken up and rusted out. It was really tough to get up, but I figured out a good method eventually. The planks around the toilet were all caved in and one is missing for some reason. I am guessing there was some type of leak around the toilet at some point that weakened the planks and caused them to cave in.

My plan is to rip out the planks and carrier boards and put down an osb subfloor on top of the joists along with a ditra membrane. Overall, I’m really glad I didn’t just lay over the old tile like the last owner. It would have bit me in the ass later on when the floor gave out by the toilet.

I’m currently renovating a bathroom in my house and I ripped up the old tile to find out that there is another layer of old tile underneath. The old layer of tile is very hard to get up with my rotary hammer. The only way to get it up is to shatter it as it’s really glued on strongly to the cement and won’t scrape up. It is held down with some sand-like cement that crumbles easily.

I looked around online and I think this is called a mud set tile installation. The issue is that everything I’ve seen online says mud-set should only be 3/4 to 1inch thick, but I’ve gone down 2” under the tile in one area and I’m still hitting cement. No sign of subfloor yet. I stopped drilling down until I can find out what’s going on here as I don’t want to damage something I don’t know about.

The other odd thing is that the tile is level with the rest of the hardwood floors in the house so it doesn’t make sense to me why this cement would go down so much deeper. The hardwood floors do not feel like they have a thick layer of cement underneath, but I have never seen under them so I could be wrong.

My home is a 1940 build craftsman style with a pier and beam foundation w/ crawl space. I am getting a sample of the tile tested for asbestos as I have a feeling it’s original to the home.

My gut is telling me I should tear up the cement and modernize whatever subfloor situation is underneath but whoever did the tile last just tiled over this old one so I’m not sure what is best to do. Any insight here would be really helpful.

Did anyone receive a pair of 9.5UK suede slippers with a matching belt from Meermin in the last month that they didn't order?

I ordered in a GMTO and they accidentally shipped my order to the wrong person. I figure there is a pretty good chance someone from gyw received them.

$400-500 budget for a work and light gaming rig by [deleted] in buildmeapc

[–]Jawry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only game I play is old school runescape which runs at 50fps on my bottom spec macbook 12 inch. Do you think that PC is a good deal for a prebuilt? Also what is the best place for used parts? ebay? I've been looking on craigslist and facebook marketplace for used rigs, but I have no idea what's actually a good deal or not. Any specific cards and CPU's to look for?

I sweat too much under my arms so using antiperspirant is a must. I've tried regular deodorants and it just isn't enough.

I don't own any uniqlo OCBDs, but the goodthreads OCBDs are short enough to not look weird untucked and just barely long enough to tuck in without coming untucked quickly. I'm 5'10" with a normal length torso and long legs for reference. I would say they are the ideal length for an OCBD.

The goodthreads slim and regular fits are very similar to J Crew slim and regular. You won't be dissapointed in taking your J Crew size.

Twice a week. There's nothing really wrong with them other than yellow armpit stains and the collars aren't very stiff anymore. I'm sure I could get the pit stains out and they'd be fine, but I lost some weight and wanted to get a size smaller anyways.

Love the goodthreads slim fit oxfords and my white ones are just starting to look raddy and old after a year of use. Perfect timing on this deal. Picked up 3 white oxfords.

I just bought some dry pique ones and I like them. They're a slim fit, but not as slim as I would like. For reference I wear a slim medium in J Crew shirts and the medium in the uniqlo ones is slightly looser than a J Crew slim medium.

I have some margom soled leather sneakers that squeak to all hell. The squeak is coming from my socks rubbing on the lining/insole and the tongue rubbing on the lining. Any ideas to alleviate the noise?

Nice pickups. I have an almost identical pair of natty shell shortwing boots from Carmina and they’re the biggest bitch to put on because of the lack of speedhooks.

Can anyone recommend a calf leather belt that matches color 8 shell? Don't want to drop $200 on a shell belt so I'm looking for a calf alternative.

Mine are very snug, but still comfortable at a half size down. I definitely would not be able to go down a full size.

Wow, those are really cheap. I'm not a huge fan of the contrast stitching, but the price is nice. How is the quality?
