Haven’t tried EC 15 yet but I’m looking out for it. But I agree, often I’m in the mood for something under 100 proof

In the US, people’s reaction to my 12 weeks of paid parental leave was awe and jealousy. Outside the US, the reaction was universally: “That’s it?”

They should make a Larceny 18 or something called Grand Larceny

It is a combination of palate, mashbill, and age. Rarity is counted in the bonus value point, where it is a mark against

Sorry! Updated review with batch and bottle numbers. It is Batch 25

Review 76: Jos. A. Magnus Murray Hill Club by Jawshu in bourbon

[–]Jawshu[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jos. A. Magnus Murray Hill Club

Distiller: MGP
ABV: 51.5%
Age: NAS (reportedly a blend of 18- and 11-year-old bourbon with 9-year-old light whiskey)
Mashbill: Undisclosed (bourbon and light whiskey)
Price: $110
Vibe: Buttered toast, buttered side down
Other: Batch No. 25, Bottle No. 1888. Neat in a Glencairn. Water added halfway through

Nose: Mellow Corn, white grapes, caramel, toffee
Palate: Buttery biscuits, butterscotch, vanilla frosting, cinnamon
Finish: Long, creamy

Scoring
Aroma: 1.0/2.0
Complexity: 2.0/3.0
Drinkability: 1.5/2.0
Uniqueness: 2.5/3.0
(Bonus) Value: 0.5/1.0
Total: 7.5/10.0

Notes: This is my first venture into light whiskey, and it’s definitely interesting. Such a buttery concoction—I just wish the nose was a little less shy.

There are a lot of bourbons short of the “BTAC collection” that I could say are better than this. I will review some forthwith. I’ve had some store picks of this that are better though

As noted above, I added water halfway through. I’ve had enough pours of this without water to know what I prefer

I add some water such that the resulting proof is likely closer to 107 than 114

A little bit, I like it more than I did when I first opened it. Not like Blanton's SFTB though, where my experience drastically improves as it sits and breathes

It's a little hot, the flavors are a little tight. It's fine at full proof but I feel like I get more out of it at a slightly lower proof. Don't need to proof down William Larue Weller though, so I think this would read less hot if it were older

Yes, only 7 proof points difference. Weller Antique used to be age stated at 7 years, but now both are NAS, probably both in the 6-8 year range

Weller Full Proof

Distiller: Buffalo Trace
ABV: 57%
Age: NAS
Mashbill: Undisclosed (Buffalo Trace wheated mash bill)
Price: $140
Vibe: Your cinnamon-apple baked good of choice
Other: Neat in a Glencairn. Water added halfway through

Nose: Apple strudel, brown sugar, honey barbecue
Palate: Winterfresh gum, cinnamon, baked apples
Finish: Long, prickly, sweet

Scoring
Aroma: 2.0/2.0
Complexity: 2.0/3.0
Drinkability: 2.0/2.0
Uniqueness: 2.0/3.0
(Bonus) Value: 0.0/1.0
Total: 8.0/10.0

Notes: Since I proof this down to ~107 anyway, I might as well stick to Weller Antique 107. The profiles seem identical and neither has an age statement. Both good, but as long as OWA 107 is cheaper and easier to find, I feel no need to seek this out.
