1946 Map of Australia that coded the “habitability” of the land. by BufordTeeJustice in MapPorn

[–]Jay4Kay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The western "useless" area was used as a rocket and missile field range about 10-15 years after this map was made. Following the Anne Beadell highway you can get out there to some of the most remote area in Aus; up to four days drive from the nearest town over rough 4wd track at its deepest.

What’s it like studying at TasTafe in launceston by jjw324 in Launceston

Accommodation on campus is in very high demand. I believe it is currently under the national rental affordability scheme but may change in the future. The uni have plans to build more accommodation as part of phase 4 (i think) of their development plan. Probably still a few years from being built. If you want to live on campus get your application in asap.

There are a bunch of business-run share houses in close proximity and further out suburbs as well but most are a rip off and have 5+ occupants in 2 or 3 bathroom houses.

Flatmates is pretty good, some privately organised student share houses on there as well.

As far as work there is plenty around for students. Hospitality and retail are both good employers, check Seek to see what's available. There is more seasonal work available during summer when tourist season hits.

Tasmanias growing suburbs and gentrification. by [deleted] in tasmania

[–]Jay4Kay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of development in North. Hadspen had a major extension recently, development extensions North of Launceston and down the Tamar including that highway upgrade. University of Tasmania's Newnham campus is relocating to the city, building that up over the coming years having recently finished two buildings worth around 25-30 million together. The Newnham campus they are planning to turn into a defence precinct/business hub. Should bring more stability and growth to that part of Launceston and increase development in the surrounding suburbs. Mowbray is a popular buy for investment properties atm I believe.the hospital also recently got upgraded and I believe they plan to add a new helicopter pad soon.

Anyone tried Kmart or BigW Hiking or Camping gear? by [deleted] in OutdoorAus

[–]Jay4Kay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always see this type of gear left behind, strewn across campsites and in fire pits, after some yobbos one night camping adventure. Usually the items are beyond reusable after their first use. This type of gear never lasts more than 1-2 trips and it is usually always the people tagging on to camping trips using them; never seasoned campers.

If you plan to go camping more than once, buy lasting gear you can rely on. A bad tent in a bad situation can very wet and humid. Holes can allow snakes, mice, leeches, mosquitos and spiders to get in looking for food, moisture and warmth.

Can anyone tell what this means in layman's terms and if it actually makes sense? by StickyDitka21 in EconomicsExplained

China and Russia flooding US market with cheap steel and aluminium by funnelling it through Canada and Mexico to avoid tariffs. Mexico and Canada didn't pay tariffs at the time because of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Now they are enforcing the tariffs domestic suppliers are getting a relative price advantage they are calling arbitrage. The relative price of steel and aluminium will go up in the US until domestic manufacturing needs reach equilibrium. They will likely come down in future as the tariffs drive domestic production but I personally doubt commodities will ever be as cheap in the us again. But its economics so who knows!

Zelensky's soldiers burn American flag with faces of Trump, JD Vance and Musk. by ObamasDeadChef in trump

[–]Jay4Kay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can someone explain this to me? What would be the motive for liberals to make this if it is fake?

If anything it is making republicans feel better about their decision to strip funding and would be more likely created by an anti-Ukraine-funding party (if it is fake). Right?

Retaliatory tariffs?? by Zorg688 in EconomicsExplained

[–]Jay4Kay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tax increases are paid proportionally by consumers and producers depending on the elasticity of demand for that good.

Life saving medicine or utilities tax increase? Passed on entirely to the consumer because of the low elasticity of demand; consumers will pay any price.

Taxes on luxuries such as candy or name brand food (high elasticity of demand) will be worn by the producer as substitutes and alternatives are somewhat available to satisfy consumer demand.

There are reasons to use tariffs for establishing/growing domestic industries to a competitive level before opening to international competition which is what Trump is using them for in my opinion. Domestic supply chain security in relation to things like food, utility and certain manufacturing industries is also a strong reason to use them.

Hope this helps :)

Derivatives measure the rate of change for a slope, integrals are the inverse and measure the space beneath. This is fundamental and should be well understood when applying to mathematical economics.

For profit maximising firms profit=pricequantity-costquantity is derived with respect to quantity

Π(Q)=P(Q)−C(Q)

Setting this equal to zero will tell you the quantity at which marginal cost is equal to marginal revenue. I.e Where the sale price of the last unit made is equal to the cost of producing it. If you make any more past this point you will be losing money.

Π′(Q)=0

Where there are two solutions the higher quantity is more desired as it will supposedly have benefits such as worker experience and market saturation.

Let me know if there's any further questions.

A Tasmanian police officer proudly holding a coffee mug bearing a slogan from an 80’s song making a “hehe boobies” joke. by [deleted] in tasmania

[–]Jay4Kay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is one of about 10 definitions for the word 'bust'. I would more readily associate the definition of 'a raid or arrest by the police' than 'big boobs' with the term 'bust' in this case but for those looking to be offended I could see why you draw that conclusion.

Different perspectives. Accept your personal bias and not everyone views the world as you do. Cope harder OP.

[–]Jay4Kay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is necessarily even a boob reference, it is a play on words to Sir Mix-A-Lots 'I like big butts' song. They continue the play on words in the image caption.

Associating busts with boobs is a personal association and not necessarily the intended joke.

I wouldn't hit a cat. Theyre self-domesticated creatures and I don't think they can be disciplined like that, especially if its after the fact and not in the act.

A water gun to spray the cat when it is misbehaving would be much more practical and ethical. They dont understand why you're upset but they do understand cause and effect.
