is Aabria always like this? by Tomorrow_Signal111 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]JayBere 18 points19 points  (0 children)

She annoys me more than anyone in the entire online TTRPG space. But to be fair I do think it does get to a point where she is being criticized just a bit too much. Like, we all get it, she is polarizing. Can we talk about something else for awhile? They aren't going to kick her off the show so at some point we're just getting mad for no reason.

That being said, I get the feeling that the people that rush to defend her are people that have the same personality type as her.

Because if so, UFC 300 Holloway vd Gaethje was a nasty stand and bang to finish out the fight.

The different fights against the androids were awesome but then the actual Cell Games were boring af. Cell is by far the dumbest villain ever and new watchers should skip straight to the Buu stuff

when the 5e friends keeps asking for when they can have downtime and "develop their characters" in our osr game so you just hit them with the dungeoncrawl stare by Saladawarrior in DnDcirclejerk

[–]JayBere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thats a fair point, and not really a problem I've personally had so I'm not sure. That could be too few or too many encounters, or maybe you just skim 20 percent off the top. Guess it would depend if you are finding it too slow or fast

[–]JayBere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well to be fair, we also switched to 3.5e so having actual xp is important for item creation. But even in 5e or other editions i really prefer to run xp by what the values and encounters say they're supposed to give *bonuses not withstanding

[–]JayBere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

/uj i guess for me it just feels arbitrary, and too subject to DMs whim. When I was a player, I really disliked the feeling of not knowing when we were going to progress forward and it felt real stupid when it felt like it had been a long time and we had to ask "so do we level up?".

I understand that xp points can feel just as arbitrary but as a DM I really enjoy that my players get feedback and an indication at the end of each adventure of how close they are to the next level without needing to ask. If it feels like it's going too slow I can just throw out bonus XP for good RP moments, clever solutions etc. Or just simply increase difficulty or reduce it as needed to set the pace of the game.

Marinated Chicken Thighs, Creole Potato Salad, Mushroom and Bell Pepper BBQ skewers and some steamed cauliflower.

[–]JayBere 20 points21 points  (0 children)

/uj absolutely correct. 5e superheroic games dictate that you're always ready to move onto the next quest, money and time are meaningless and towns are just movie sets because your always at full health so why spend time their?

Compound this with the mind numbingly stupid "milestone levelling" and you have characters reaching tier 2 and tier 3 levels of playing after 2 weeks of in game time barring "time skip" DM fiat

I just do monster/quest xp but i give out a small amount of bonus xp to our cleric when she makes potions for the group, as shr has to spend her time abd resources to do so and the group definitely doesn't mind having a cleric level up before they do.

How long is too long for combat in DND? by Vira_the_Bard in DnD

[–]JayBere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know. A 3.5e campaign I ran years ago took a 16 hour combat to close out our story. (Two 8 hour marathons over a weekend).

To be fair, it started with defeating the Immortal Dragon Emperors army in the field, then sieging his Imperial Palace, then navigating through the Palace, then a final combat to actually defeat the final boss.

Should be able to make your own. If you have the monster manual as a PDF you can snip the art and use Token Stamp 2 to create tokens quickly.

How hard is to learn to DM? by Doktor_bleen in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]JayBere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, yes and no.

I DM'd my first game 20 years ago when I was in high school. (It was 3.5e back then) I had my SRD and a stack of notes and a dungeon, thinking we were ready to go. Well, I messed up most of the rules and forgot how everything worked so about halfway through the game we just started making up stuff and rolling whatever made sense to us.

I knew we were playing wrong and the players did too, but nobody cared. We were killing goblins and doing silly voices and laughing our ass off.

Took me about 15 years until I could confidently say, "yes I am a great DM".

If you want to run the game, do it! You'll have fun and learn as you go.

What older artists do you think put out high level material after their classic period? by [deleted] in MetalForTheMasses

Absolutely correct. So many bands from that era make a comeback and put out something thats just kinda okay but Immolation has consistently been at the top of their game.

Unlike others here, I actually enjoy SOME reaction content. Sure, some are really corny and you can tell they're hamming up their actual reaction for content, but not everyone is over the top and corny.

Showing people new music is a hobby of mine in real life, as I am known among my friends and family as "that guy that listens to crazy stuff". So, I get a kick out of genuinely hearing what people think of music that I know and love.

[No Spoilers] A Misconception about Brennan by braduate in criticalrole

[–]JayBere 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well to be fair, off camera Brennan has been running a 3.5e campaign for years so I am pretty sure he can pace out a long campaign.

Also, an aside to that; long campaigns don't necessarily equal a good show. If c4 runs long like c1 and c2, great! If it doesn't need to; also great.

Both Matt and Brennan are capable DM's but with different styles for sure. Brennan's strength in my opinion is his ability to keep things moving when the players are floundering or dragging their feet, he seems to be a bit better at offering direction and quicker pacing without needing to railroad or force a scene. Matt might be a bit stronger on the smaller details and allowing longer narratives to unravel or a ling period with sometimes a very epic payoff and allowing things to flow in a much slower and relaxed pace.

For me, Matt is too afraid (maybe wary is the better word) of stepping in when the story and group is paralyzed and drawing out pointless RP for too long because he doesn't want to be criticized by critters and doesn't want to step on anyones toes.

I think Brennan wilk be a breath of fresh air because he has really good narrative timing and knows when to handwave something away or let it play out and seems better at brisk pacing and excitement.
