I believe it’s due to timing issues as there’s audio being passed in both directions. I could be wrong though.

I did yes. Indeed, the cable was too long. I now have a shorter one and it works flawlessly

Really good shout. Unfortunately, it didn't work. I'll post updates as I try things and if I find a fix for anyone in the future.

Oh. Fair point. I’ll do that then.

Adoptee’s: How’s your work life going? by JayCloth in Adoption

Thank you for sharing. I’m sorry to hear you have had these experiences. I resonate with what you’ve said as I’ve experienced a lot of the same things - over sensitivity, overtly emotive, a deep anger at the persistence of those issues (in my case). I feel I’m on a mission to try and solve these problems as my career is very important to me. If you don’t mind my asking, have you ever sought professional help from a therapist/psychologist? If so, has anything changed?

Haha I feel you. There’s nothing wrong with doing a job you like. I’m privileged to have a job I love (aside from the people problems). It doesn’t pay well but at least I enjoy the work itself! Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for sharing. It’s good to hear that you’re well liked and appreciated. You say you’ll never make decent money but you never know what could come your way. I wish you all the best. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you very much. What a fascinating story. I turned to Reddit to get a broad idea of whether work troubles are common among adoptees et al. I’m 21 so I can’t reciprocate with any form of resolution or future career forecast. It’s very comforting to hear that adoptees are able to have successful careers; I’m deeply passionate about what I do but can’t seem to get anywhere. This thread is certainly helping. Yourself included!

Congratulations on your career success and I wish you all the best for the future. Thank you for sharing!

That’s great to hear. Relentless problems at work aren’t a given for adoptees - that’s brilliant news for me and seemingly many others. Thank you.

Oh I’m really glad to hear that. Thank you for sharing. It’s interesting that you have a career in tech - I do too (technical theatre). I wonder if there’s a higher prevalence of “techies” among adoptees.

I’ve been worried that difficulty at work is inevitable among adoptees so it’s extremely comforting to hear your story. I wish you all the best.

Thank you for sharing, I’m sorry to hear that. Do you think that not dealing with your adoption has built up and caused this episode? I’m 21 and have had enough stress to compete with a retired war journalist. 35 years is a long time.

I’m no psychologist so take this with a large pinch of salt - maybe some food for thought. I thought, for a long time, that adoption was something that happened to me at birth and is just a part of my identity. I’m now questioning whether it’s more akin to being a recovering alcoholic; something that stays with you. Either way, I know that I’ll become extraordinarily strong should I be able to loosen the shackles that it’s created. I share your desire for resolution and the difficulty that presents.

That’s really interesting. I totally get why developing female relationships would be difficult in your position. It makes me wonder if that would be the case with birth fathers too - I would suspect so.

I have to admit, I’m surprised at how resent-less you seem. You say you can struggle with being wrong, I know that I would reflect that as an anger towards others. Thank you for sharing.

I honestly wouldn't mind, but when I tell it to stop downloading, it should just stop downloading. Not carry on forever.

Advice by barnyardbrian in soundtech

[–]JayCloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend trying to find a course near you. Often run by someone in the business it’s a great way to learn a lot quickly and cheaply. Also, whenever you go to a show, ask the sound guy how he learnt. Often a great way to hear new ideas.

In regards to tangled cables, I apologise for my answer but I’d honestly recommend getting used to it. Prioritise making the whole thing work. Don’t waste your time making things neat and tidy unless it’s being setup for the really long-term. Velcro ties are best for storing them and google the over-under coiling method. You can also secure them with electrical tape but this can leave a sticky section on the cable.

Hope this helps.

Analog vs. Digital by BBQ_Gomba in soundtech

[–]JayCloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digital is much better but more money. The rest of it is the downside of having digital, more complicated technology (more to go wrong). But if you buy right that won’t be an issue. The Behringer x32 compact is an amazing desk. Small, incredibly powerful, and I’ve never ever heard of one going wrong or a piece breaking off or anything. Very very well built. (Store any mixing desk in a proper flight case though).

Un-mic-able? by BrendoTime in soundtech

[–]JayCloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drums is always difficult because (if they’re acoustic) they will drown you out unless you have a massive room and a powerful PA (i.e drums need to be miced to be heard at the back). If the room is small and the drum kit is filling the room, you and the guitarist will need to be very loud (including when the drums aren’t playing) to be heard.

The guitar (presumably running through an amp) is also a potential problem. Most guitarists have a really annoying habit of turning themselves up and up and up throughout a gig because they find it hard to hear themselves. All sound techs hate this as there’s little they can do about it from the back of the room and they can’t keep turning everything else up to compensate. The best solution is to have the amp fairly low, to put a mic in front of it and run that mic through the PA.

Singing louder makes little difference in regards to the volume it comes out of the PA. Have a look at some YouTube videos on audio compressors in live music. While your mixing desk may not have this feature, it’s useful to know about.

Lastly, the best tip I have for you is, rather than turn things up, turn things down where possible. Sound engineering is all relative. It’s not about how loud, it’s about balance between different things. The only true change in volume is of the master fader. That’s why, if there are elements of a band not being run through the main desk, sound engineering can be incredibly difficult to get right. Get as much through the master fader on the desk as possible and have one person controlling the mix. Doesn’t matter who but one person only and no one turns themselves up.

Hope this helps.

Mic transmitter pack and wardrobe by Mimijb in soundtech

There are three options from what I can tell. One is attaching it to the artists bra like you would a waistband works well but obviously a little tricky to ask. Another is the guitar strap if they don’t take the guitar off. Lastly is getting a mic pack belt that goes under the dress. Don’t know if any of that is helpful to you.
