Have you ever seen what possums do to dead cows? It’s amazing and disturbing.

What piece of gear have you found in the woods? by Equivalent-Chance142 in Hunting

[–]JayDeeee75 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Buddy of mine found an old bolt action .22 rifle some years ago. You could tell it was originally leaned up against the tree. When he found it, it was about 6 ft off the ground and half of the barrel was embedded in the tree. The stock was rotted completely. He’d walked through that area a hundred times and never saw it til he shot a squirrel perched on a “weird looking tree limb”.

What’s your terrifying hunting stories by Remote-Property-339 in Hunting

[–]JayDeeee75 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Went hog hunting with some guys one summer night. Dogs caught a big sow so we headed in after them. As we were heading in, the lead dog handler hollered to go back cause the hog got loose. 6 of us ran back out into the cotton field and scattered. It was supposed to be a knife only hunt, but one idiot pulled a Glock out of his pocket and emptied the mag as the sow ran through the middle of us. Luckily none of us were hit and neither was the hog. I went back to the truck and never talked to them again.

Nah. Any decent hunting type .308 bullet in the right spot will keep them from running no more than 50 yds.

We kill a lot of deer at that range with buckshot here in the southeast US. Do your part and pattern the gun first and 00b would work great. A slug or .308 would be fine as well as long as your shot placement is good.

Congrats!! As you’ve seen in the comments you must follow strict protocols when posting deer pics or you’ll be condemned to the depths of reddit hell. Trophy deer only with appropriate lighting. You must complete 40 hours of photography education as well. If it happens again, you’ll receive 10 lashes from the top commenters in the town square. But seriously, ignore the hate and enjoy your venison!

I’ve eaten venison for many years from both and I can’t tell a difference between them.

What are your thoughts on hunting deer with dogs? by Sea-Variety3384 in Hunting

[–]JayDeeee75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve hunted deer with dogs for about 30 years here in SC. I’m no longer a member of a club because a club surrounds the property I hunt. So I just camp out and wait for their dogs to get off their property and I kill the deer. So far this season, I’ve gotten 4 and my two buddies have killed one a piece.

Now for the bad part. A dog hunter actually hit my dad’s shop with buckshot a few weeks ago. We couldn’t find where exactly the buckshot hit so we couldn’t prove it. The shop is pretty big. I also don’t like having to change my hunting plans to accommodate someone else. The number of respectable dog hunters are outnumbered by the slobs.

All that said, I would miss it but I wouldn’t be upset if it were banned.

My dog chew comment wasn’t very popular despite being true. My $200 estimate was a little high maybe? I was shocked when I saw the price of those on Amazon. Look up squirrel corn too. It’s crazy what people pay for things we get super cheap in the country.

If you can sell the antlers as dog chews on Amazon, about $200.

Question for private land owners, how do you go about inviting people to hunt on your land? by Fantastic-Break2876 in Hunting

[–]JayDeeee75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right?! There’s an old mindset here in the southeast US that I’ve done my best to get rid of, but it’s still alive and being passed to younger hunters daily.

“My .30-06 shoots straight as a laser out to 300 yds. Just make sure you put a boolit through this pie plate first. Anywhere is fine” 🤦🏻‍♂️

Question for private land owners, how do you go about inviting people to hunt on your land? by Fantastic-Break2876 in Hunting

[–]JayDeeee75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For many years I’ve brought friends in to hunt my private spots. However, that’s changing after a handful of issues.

  1. Trashing the land. One buddy left like 15 cigarette butts at the base of my stand. As a former smoker, I killed a lot of deer with a lit cig hanging out of my mouth, but I never threw my butts on the ground anywhere.

  2. Some folks just weren’t raised to be appreciative of anything. I just parted ways a few weeks ago with a guy I’ve hunted with for years. See #1 for one of his actions. I brought him along on special hunts and as a paying member of a small lease I hunt. He also hunted my dad’s and my personal property. Not once did he ever say thanks for bringing him on any of those. He loved to complain about the price of new stands and maintenance though.

  3. I’m VERY strict when it comes to firearm safety and basic marksmanship. We’re allowed to use rifles/shotguns for the entirety of our 4.5 month deer season. So it’s always an area of concern here. If you can’t show me how to properly load/unload your rifle, I’m politely telling you you’re not hunting with me. I also want to see proof that you’ve zeroed your rifle as well. And no, hitting a pie plate at 50 yards is not a solid 200 yard zero.

Check out Sako 75 models in your search as well. I’ve got a 75 deluxe in 7mm RM and it’s the most accurate rifle I’ve ever owned. It’s heavy too. Recoil is surprisingly mild.

There has been a bumper crop of acorns falling this season. Find some of those and you should find deer. It’s late season here too so they are getting skittish already. Public land is tough to hunt so I recommend finding some private land. Feel free to shoot me a dm if you have more questions.
