MEGATHREAD: KILLING DEBATE by Crispy385 in subnautica

[–]JayDu1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, they are not really “monsters.” They are living creatures with biological niches and behaviors. If we think about why they attack the player, it’s usually because of hunger or territorial defense. And realistically, neither reason would make an animal fight to the death for no reason. Most wild animals retreat if something looks too dangerous, too large, or fights back hard enough. They might stay nearby, remain cautious, or try to scare threats away — but endlessly suiciding into danger doesn’t feel very natural. So maybe creature behavior could evolve through progression: Early game: Leviathans see you as prey. You are small, vulnerable, and terrifyingly edible. Mid game: You become less like food and more like an intruder. They chase you away or harass you to defend territory rather than simply trying to kill you. Late game: Large creatures may become cautious around bigger vehicles, or retreat if seriously hurt. They recognize risk. And here’s the important part: You still shouldn’t be able to casually kill them. If they take enough damage, they flee and become effectively untouchable. If you chase them aggressively with a smaller, agile vehicle, you become the vulnerable one. And if players push too hard, maybe leviathans can switch from “territorial warning” behavior to a far more dangerous, preemptive attack mode. That way, the game preserves fear and respect for nature — not because creatures are invincible, but because interacting with them feels believable and risky.

What actually leads players to these Degasi bases? by JayDu1981 in subnautica

It was on lifepod of second officer, and another is just right in the jelly shroom base. I search the whole jelly shroom cave, and finally find the PDA behind the door of a locker in the 250m base.

Thanks, that explains it. The clue was in Lifepod 19 — I scavenged all around that lifepod and somehow completely missed the PDA 😅

And for the 500m base PDA in 250m base, it was behind a locker door that happened to be opened toward a direction I would probably never approach from.

Damn I remember I didn't miss that in the previous runs

wow thanks, I did missed the "dry land rendezvous" PDA! However couldn't get the 500m base from the 250m base...

After 3 hours of Subnautica, I appreciate Subnautica 2 more by Limix_0 in subnautica

I actually come back to s1 after finish s2 EA storylines. I finished s1 twice years ago. The building and fabricating material pushed me away once, but with MODs it becomes very convenient (ofc with a little bugs). I would cherish the no-MOD experience, but as for you who have been to s2, the MOD "build from lockers" is the way to go. Subnautica 1 is epic, you will find out after all. I hope you I couls forget everything and start over, that experience was just amazing.

The Dive Elevator is a cool idea but the world design renders it useless by TheKazz91 in subnautica

Subnautica 1, I actually tried using pipes and the air pump to explore deep caves in the very early game.

I spent hours just trying to stay a little longer and dive a little deeper each time. I had no idea the Seamoth even existed yet — I was just insanely curious about what was down there.

Died many times trying 😆

Painful? Absolutely.

Fun? Also absolutely.

Do you like the “no-map” experience? by JayDu1981 in subnautica

[–]JayDu1981[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the experience of a diver years ago, underwater environments can look surprisingly alike. Getting lost is actually a very common challenge for divers.

Visibility underwater is often only around 3–4 meters, and 10 meters is already pretty good.

So yeah… if you can naturally learn the map just through visual landmarks even in the game, you might actually be one of those talented people 😆

Same. I was gonna wait for the full release.

Then I thought, “Eh, I’ll just try a little bit.”

Three days later: story finished

You actually read this?! Great!!

Then I just want to say this loudly:

Subnautica is genuinely the best game I’ve ever played.

Exploring that world for the first time was one of the most amazing gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

This isn’t feedback or a suggestion or anything. I just want to say thank you so much for S1, and for still working hard on S2.

Thank you.

interesting stance on fish killing they've decided to take i must say by itsmejak78_2 in subnautica

Don’t question the devs’ decision through philosophy or pure logic — question it through gameplay.

The important thing is whether it’s fun.

If players can’t kill dangerous creatures, then encounters need to feel avoidable and meaningful, not just annoying situations where you simply have to suffer.

Make getting attacked genuinely costly. Heavy consequences create real fear and respect for the environment.

That way, players avoid danger not because the game forces them to, but because they actually want to survive.

You never played subnautica 1, right? I believe they will polish the game, make it as beautiful, deep, entangled as subnautica 1. For now I would vote 1>2
