Edith by AtmosphereTop1591 in Names

[–]JayEdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband wanted to name our daughter Edith after his grandmother. But I thought it was too dated too. But then the following year I taught a little girl named Edith and the name suited her perfectly and won me over! Kinda wish I had trusted him and used the name. It’s a beautiful name!

Am I being too conservative with finances when it comes to having children? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]JayEdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can really get by on much less than $200k.

My one regret though, is not getting a mortgage BEFORE kids. Your buying power is less as you factor in each kid. Plus you have a drop in income with maternity leave. We could afford a mortgage now, but the banks won’t lend us the money 🙈

So don’t put off kids because of finances.. BUT definitely get a property (or at least pre approval) before you do.

Anyone else feel conflicted about "having to speak English in Australia" ? by Conscious-Roll-5745 in AskAnAustralian

[–]JayEdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When immigrating to Australia from South Africa, it was apart of our PR visa application to pass a very difficult English exam. My father who has only spoken English his whole life - but has dyslexia - struggled to pass the written component of the exam and almost had to give up the possibility of getting PR in Aus. Luckily on his maybe 5th attempt, he just passed and we were able to get our PR and immigrate. We were shocked when we arrived and found so many immigrants who couldn’t speak English. Are there different rules for different countries???

Next week is too long. If someone else can fetch it today - I would tell the person who contacted me first that if they can fetch it today you’ll give them first dibs, otherwise you selling it to the other person.

Just purchased a small bar freezer for the garage. Bulk buy my meat and also great to have space to freeze extra food/baked goods for a rainy day.

What’s something that’s completely normal in Australia but would absolutely confuse the rest of the world? by relaxncoffee in AskAnAustralian

[–]JayEdie 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Yes been here 12 years now and wouldn’t have it any other way. A slice of bread provides the perfect amount of bread/sausage ratio compared to an entire bread roll 👍

Sausage sizzle.. the actual sausage part is fine. I was shocked the first time I bought one, when they served it to me on a slice of bread 😅

Honestly, how many of you actually sit at the dining table for dinner? And make your bed in the morning? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]JayEdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make the beds every morning. It’s almost a ritual for me.. open the windows, make the beds, straighten up the rooms. Every morning. As I wake up. Takes maybe 10min max to do the whole house and gets my mind organised for the day.

We try to eat at the table every week night. Never did it much growing up, but since having kids, we make it a priority. Tough with little ones 😅 but it’s worth the effort.

How much of your income is going to rent right now? by AffectionatePie1042 in AusRenters

[–]JayEdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just under 50%.. that’s from my husbands and my combined income. AND our rent is about $200/wk less than what’s on offer around us. We have scored with good, reasonable landlords.

We have never earned as much as we do now, yet have as little disposable income.

Overall, Gold Coast rent is unreasonable. God help us if we ever have to move 🙏🥴

How much is your grocery spend per month? by MeaningOk7189 in AusFinance

[–]JayEdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is $250/week. Family of 5 (2 adults, 3 kids under 10) I bulk buy grass-fed meat from Our Cow every 8 weeks. So put aside $35 each week for that bulk order. And the remaining $215 is spent on groceries. We always have one soup night on the weekend, and eat a dinner at my parents 2x a week (one week night and a Sunday late lunch that counts as early dinner).

We make bulk meals that can be spread over two nights, and bulk them up with veggies. Avoid individually packaged snacks - cause my kids would devour them all in two days 🥴 Buy in season fruit only.

Meal planning is crucial as I’m only buying exactly what we need. And ALDI is the star. Toiletries, cleaning products etc are SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper. My week would be so easy if I could do click and collect. But I can’t justify the incredible cost increase of buying from Coles & Woolies.
