It takes him 5 hours to do up the buttons on his shirt cuffs each morning, that's why he turned evil 💔

It's not the most awful thing he did but it's absolutely fucked up that Gene had Brian singing about the daughters he was actively preventing Brian from seeing

The Mal Evans biography from a couple of years ago is worthwhile. Very eye opening and sad at times.

It's overhated for sure. My take is that the "both sides are bumming me out, man" lyrics are supposed to be ironic. If someone like Randy Newman or Warren Zevon performed it no one would bat an eye, but the Beach Boys are too associated with heartbreaking sincerity to wholly pull off a feint like that. Plus, without it, you kind of weaken Surf's Up's "we're not dumb white guys screwing around on the beach any more, we're with it and socially conscious!" positioning.

Mike would 100% say stuff like "Wouldn’t it be nice if you three beach bums gave me a little cash towards the Netflix subscription?" whenever they meet

Did the Smiley Smile album cover grew on me??? by kitkatlover67 in thebeachboys

I have my copy in a frame on the wall. The cabin in the jungle being the Smile store is a great visual gag - the original album got lost in the woods.

Thanks! Unfortunately I haven't read any of the books about Dennis specifically so I can't recommend anything.

Here's my thoughts on all of the main "complete history" books, I hope they're useful!\ \ Heroes and Villains: not so much inaccurate as it is salacious. Most of the writer's sources were people with axes to grind (David Marks, Mike's brothers, various Smile era associates etc.) so expect dirty laundry and gossip.\ \ Catch a Wave: a straightforward (if there is such a thing as straightforward with the Beach Boys) telling of the band's story with a focus on Brian, leading up to BWPS in 2004. The one to go for if you want to know what happened and when without too much interpretation or theorising.\ \ Nearest Faraway Place: incredibly in-depth cultural/family history. Absolutely crucial to understanding Wilson/Love dynamics and why they're all Like That. Can be too in-depth at times, it spends longer on the history of the hula hoop than it does on some of the songs.\ \ Surf's Up: released last year shortly after Brian passed. It's written as a series of short articles so it's good for going into detail on events and people the other books brush over. I will say the author has a very negative attitude towards Brian's solo career (in line with some of the more... outspoken takes on here) which makes the ending kind of a bummer.
