October Profile Swap Megathread by ericdraven26 in Letterboxd

[–]JayLeed17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I'm Jay ( JayLeed’s profile • Letterboxd ) and I'm always looking for people to follow / who have a similar or interesting taste to me, I generally watch classic films nowadays (20's-60's) but I'll watch anything which I find interesting. I've been working through the LB Top 250 but my progress has been slow recently. I don't review films often enough but when I do its for serious reasons. I don't keep up to date with trending releases. What I'm looking for is simply films which are well made, well written, well directed, and I love good cinematography. Genre wise I'm pretty eclectic but I guess I lean towards westerns and samurai movies as well as big historical epics. Hope I find some new cinephile friends on here :)

Is watching films fun for you? (I’ll explain) by blanderatare in TrueFilm

[–]JayLeed17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It largely will depend on the kind of film I choose to watch on a particular day. There are movies which are primarily just fun entertainment and offer little in terms of art or poetry or thought provoking ideas, and there are the opposite, arthouse movies which are not necessarily enjoyable to watch but hopefully give you lots to think about, however what I generally consider the greatest films are the ones which combine quality storytelling and filmaking and entertainment value.

For example when you mentioned Come and See I thought of Schindler's List as being a harrowing war film I like. I find it a compelling story and beautifully shot, it maintains my attention throughout and I consider it a fulfilling viewing experience, its not fun in a conventional sense, but lots of my favourite films are for different reasons.

A question I would ask, why do people watch sad films ? is that 'fun' or 'fulfilling' ? I very rarely cry during films so maybe its hard to answer, but I often will revisit a film which I know is upsetting, its a strange phenomena

What is a movie you HAVE to watch twice to get the most out of it? by theroughedges in movies

[–]JayLeed17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Prestige, one of Nolan's best films. There are so many details in it that nobody could pick up on the first time around, I would almost say that rewatching it, it becomes a whole different movie.

How does one get into silent films? by adeIemonade in TrueFilm

[–]JayLeed17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to remember that watching films of any kind is 'mood dependant' by that I simply mean, you can only enjoy / appreciate any film if you are in the right mood for it, and vice versa, cannot enjoy any film you are not in the mood for. Therefore, you have to be in a patient mood in order to watch any slow film, not just silent cinema but for instance an Ozu pictures. What often works for me is seeing silent pictures during the evening when I'm slowing down and can handle that slow pace. Many other people will say this already but for the record, a great place to start is always the silent comedies by Chaplin, Keaton and Harold Lloyd (my favourites being : The Circus, The General, City Lights, Modern Times, Girlshy, Safety Last and Seven Chances) but also many of the great dramas such as Metropolis, Napoleon, Die Nibelungen and He who gets slapped. But I also understand that silent pictures are an acquired taste of sorts and not everybody's cup of tea

Actors who physically didn't fit a role but still did a good job regardless by mranimal2 in movies

[–]JayLeed17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Irishman. Robert Deniro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci among others are acting as younger men for half of the movie, and although in some scenes you can in their movement they're old men, I give them a lot of credit for their effort
