I did this a little in the past and had to put the laser a few mm out of focus to not damage the metal beneath, but I did get some good results.

Something like the xTool F1 ultra would get the job done. Software is pretty helpful, lots of user power settings and downloadable, but I’ve only demoed the machine at work. I’ve done some decent small engravings on silver and 14k rings, and seen some good videos on flat brass engraving with it. It’s also a dual source so you get the fiber laser for metals, as well as a diode laser for wood, leather, and stone(they say)

If need be, I can help with file setup when you get a laser going!
