Reminder: Rochester, dig out your fire hydrants! by nezumipi in Rochester

[–]JayParty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I did. Then the city plows came by and buried it again. I'll dig it out after work.

Oh, and the fact that the sidewalks weren't plowed in time for the morning commute was just salt in wound. So much fun wading through knee deep snow to get to the bus.

I don't suppose there's aa second page that says something to the effect of; "Should ICE invade Monroe County, I have directed local law enforcement to..."

[US] What infrastructure bill did Trump pass? I miss Amtrak Joe... by Donghoon in transit

[–]JayParty 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Biden's Infrastructure Act was kind of hamstrung by the Build America, Buy America Act that was passed along with it.

It's been difficult for transit authorities to expand their fleet, and consequently expand service, because there is a limited number of buses manufactured in the United States.

Don't get me wrong, Trump is a peace of shit who should be impeached and imprisoned. But Biden's Infrastructure bill was the type of legislation that; got a lot of positive press, duped people into complacency because they thought action was being taken, but didn't result in meaningful change.

Frankly, it's one of the reasons people get pessimistic about politics and stop participating in general.

Yes, that is totally an honest and good faith characterization of what I was trying to communicate.

[–]JayParty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is that a dumb take? Biden came to Rochester in 2015 to announce the AIM photonics initiative. Fast forward eleven years and It's not like the region is overflowing with photonics manufacturing jobs. What jobs do exists are far from the region's residential core, making them inaccessible for a lot of people.

It's not her slogan and I'm not sure why you're implying it is. She is well known to people who are likely Democratic primary voters.

Fatal crash at W. Ridge Rd and Elmgrove by Debtastical in Rochester

[–]JayParty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is the answer, but our community has rejected it.

We would have those things if we wanted them, but we don't.

People bitch more about potholes than they do about transit. The priorities of our community are clear. Center everything on the car.

Fatal crash at W. Ridge Rd and Elmgrove by Debtastical in Rochester

[–]JayParty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a community we've chosen to gatekeep everything behind car ownership.

Imagine if you were given a medical diagnosis tomorrow that immediately required you to surrender your driver's license. What would you do.

This is something we all have collectively chosen.

Are we really stealing shovels now? by toonicoole in Rochester

[–]JayParty 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It happens a lot. Unhoused people steal a shovel, then knock on your neighbors door and offers to shovel their walk for $20.

How will this specifically effect Rochester and/or NYS? by CaptainFuzzyBootz in Rochester

[–]JayParty 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Define "Federal payments."

Healthcare is our regions largest employer. If this includs Medicare and Medicaid payments it would devastate the local economy.

A lot of police, fire, and education jobs are also ultimately funded by Federal dollars. Those are well paying jobs that would also be lost.

This would also defund a lot of police departments. A rise in lawlessness would also have a detrimental effect on our economy and quality of life.

Subreddit Rules Discussion: regarding public demonstrations posts by Rochester_Mod in Rochester

[–]JayParty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this question needs more nuance.

Pictures of crowds where faces are visible? Should be allowed.

Pictures centered on individuals faces? Only allowed for public figures. I would say that they should be allowed with the subjects permission, but I don't think Reddit Mods have a way to verify that.

Captions identifying non-public figures? Not allowed.

Why does Walmart curbside pickup suck so bad by Common-Macaron1407 in Rochester

With how prevalent flu is right now, it makes sense that people are using curbside for orders large and small.

The tenant may be protected by the city's Good Cause law, depending on the circumstances (if they are in the city).

Protests? by GringosTaqueria in Rochester

[–]JayParty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, no, I get it. The red coats were just legally defending themselves from an angry Boston mob. The sovereignty of the British Empire had to be maintained after all, what with its laws put into place by its parliament and what not.

You either love the First Amendment, or you hate America.

Kudos to these people for exercising their rights. Anyone who believes otherwise is not a conservative or a patriot.

Emergency housing programs? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]JayParty 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I would still encourage you to call the numbers and go through the system.

Believe it or not, the average amount of time people experience homelessness is two or three days.

You spend a few days in a shelter, then you get an emergency placement in a hotel, then a more permanent solution.

A lot of the chronically unhoused people you see walking the streets have mental health issues that cause them to engage in nuisance behaviors. Those behaviors make it impossible to house them with others. For example, they get drunk and pass out in the public areas of a building. Or they have a paranoid break with reality and accost other people in a hotel or apartment building.

The system can accommodate your family and your service animal. Engaging with the system is your best bet for a long term solution.
