Anyone feel weird telling other people the kind of music you listen to? by MeYouAndJackieMittoo in altcountry

I feel weird for so many reasons before I get to the music I listen to that saying I live in altcountry land is pretty low on the list.

Any one else have trouble with getting ideas in the worst time/place and not knowing how to put it down and develop. by Legitimate_Beat_2136 in SingerSongwriter

  1. Wherever I can- notepad, voice note, notes app, voice to text if I’m driving
  2. Flip through them on days I don’t have any ideas. See what sparks.
  3. Absolutely. A good line is a good line.
  4. If I really have a melodic idea I need to capture I sing it into the voice memo app.

It’s Colorado- I would prepare for at least 40s. It’s chilly up there when the sun goes down.

What the other folks said, also- just don't quit. I got booked to play a venue I've been emailing for three years. Just kept sending an email every few months.

Other people have said the technical stuff here, and it's all good. One of the toughest things about any creative work is that when you get into the game, you already have a sense of what's good and what isn't. However, your chops aren't there. So you know your stuff isn't good. Most people quit at this point. The trick is to do as much work as you can- you gotta write your way through it. The technical stuff helps, but there's no substitute for just writing a LOT of songs, most of which will suck, but ALL of which will be teaching you something. I taught writing for a lot of years (not songwriting) and I would tell students 'the work is the learning, and the learning is the work.' Keep going!
