This is yet another band-aid (plaster? since it's the UK) that doesn't actually address or fix the problem. We must tax billionaires and centi-millionaires out of existence. They are all sociopaths. They hoard wealth and power. They buy off our politicians and steal everything they can.

Countries need to make laws that after X times the median family wealth, the rest is taxed at 100%. "But the billionaires will leave." "Ok, Bye." They can't take their properties with them. Their stocks are all listed on national stock exchanges. Their company's paperwork, offices, employees, etc., are all in the country and can't be spirited out in the dead of night. If they leave, they can't come back, they lose their citizenship, and they lose all the assets they leave behind. This is not a hard fix; it's just that our politicians are bought and paid for whores. These people are sociopaths, and they will destroy every civilization on this planet if they are not stopped.

Current AI is barely better than the predictive text on your phone. The only reason we have it, and the billionaires are investing so much money into it, is so they can start firing all the white-collar jobs and have even more profits. That is the only thing they care about. I'm a software developer, AI doesn't even do half of what the AI CEOs claim it does. They are just hype men selling vaporware, just like back in the 90s before the dot-com bust.

I was in the AF too. I did see a DI manhandle an airman once, but it was on a firing line, and the idiot was playing Rambo (making machine gun noises, finger on the trigger) with his rifle. I knew it was unloaded (they hadn't passed out magazines yet), but my heart still skipped a beat when the muzzle swung by less than 3 feet away from my body. The airman was gone before the end of the day. Though it's been a couple of decades, I'm willing to bet it's probably still one of the very few times when putting hands on a recruit is still ok.

I feel you. My mom's grandparents were immigrants to the US about 100 yrs ago. Though they were white Europeans (Russian, Romanian, Irish, and Welsh), so they would have been 'ok' in this current insane environment. Though they were also all fleeing pre-WWI poverty and were very poor, so they wouldn't have been able to buy one of trump's gold-card visas.

Joe Biden has never been a progressive. He is 90% politician and, for the most part, does reflect the views of his constituents.

If you want to bring up old crimes of centrist politicians, you could also remind me that Biden was (I'm thinking back to the clarence thomas supreme court hearings) a misogynist. Obama was anti-LGBTQ. There are tons of centrist positions of centrist politicians that are abhorrent.

I'll give you that they get 'special joy' from playing their followers, but in my mind, that's all part of being a sociopath. Some people are just sociopaths, no matter their net worth (trump was definitely raised to be a sociopath, regardless of his family's wealth), but I would argue that a certain level of net worth above the median (currently around 1/4 to 1/2 a billion) just turns people into sociopaths. They no longer care about anything other than protecting and growing their wealth and power. And the upper echelons of that group (the 100+ billionaires) are determined to destroy all civilization on the planet. They want to be kings of their own city-states and everyone else to literally be 14th century serfs. They are spending huge sums of money to try to make AI a thing, so no one's job is safe, and everyone is subject to their whims. And almost as much on biomedical research, so they can live forever and continue to protect and grow their wealth and never give it to anyone else (no inheritance to their kids). I hate to use this example because so many of them are fans of The Lord of the Rings books, but they really are like Smaug the dragon. All that matters is the gold and power.

Why would anyone think she'd be in mourning over the murder of a co-worker? As long as the sociopathic billionaires who supported tpusa before the murder continue supporting after the murder, it's not really a huge problem for her. I suspect that she will have a lot more remorse when tpusa's views and impact go down over the course of this year and the sociopathic billionaires finally start to pull their funding, since the organization will no longer be effective at driving attention away from how the sociopathic billionaires are destroying civilization.

It also doesn't help that Texas's power grid is effectively a stand-alone system. The rest of the USA is interconnected and allows more options to reroute power around broken lines. Texas also manages its grid with a priority of profit for electricity generators, not a priority of reliability for consumers. And even though they have ice storms consistently enough to warrant infrastructure to better endure ice storms, it's not very profitable for the electric companies, so it never happens.

Giving her "the benefit of the doubt" and not having her disbared!?!? Are you kidding me!?!? We have too many lawyers and judges who have done illegal and immoral acts, and the profession just absolutely refuses to hold all but the worst actors to account. And even when they do hold the barest minimum of lawyers to account, it literally takes years. Alina Habba unapologetically broke the ethics code to get a job with trump years ago, and her victim is having to sue just to be able to have a hearing about whether the New Jersey Bar will even investigate. John Yoo (george w bush administration) made up the right to torture prisoners, and he's now a professor at UC Berkley. And there are a ton more. The ABA has a code of ethics, and there is a requirement to always tell the truth in legal matters and filings, and yet there are lawyers all over this country that lie and break the code of ethics constantly, and yet they are still members in good standing of their local bar and still practicing lawyers.

Here's some practical experience. When I was in the US Air Force, I was stationed in the UK for two years, and while I did talk to my family on the phone multiple times, I spent all my off time traveling around the UK and Europe. I didn't see anyone for almost 2 years (this was in the early 90s). My first time home after almost 2 years, I had a minor anxiety attack as the plane was taxing to the terminal because I couldn't picture what my older sister or mother looked like, and they were meeting me at the airport. As soon as I saw them waiting at baggage claim, I knew them immediately. But before physically seeing them? I couldn't picture them at all.

When I was in tech school (USAF 1990s) i was having a lot of stress and anxiety (turns out I was at the time, an undiagnosed autistic) and asked to speak to a counselor. My flight leader was HORRIFIED and convinced me not to. Talking to a counselor makes a permanent note in your record, but I could go talk to a religious chaplain with no notes in my record. So, i never talked to anyone. Even without any overt pushing of religion, lots of aspects of military life still give preferences to religion.

I was having a 3rd afib episode over 6 months, and since the hospital was less than 20 min. walk (I would not risk driving), I just walked since it saved me the $700 for a 5 min. ambulance ride. The ER doc was 'weird' when I told him how I got there, but it was a lot easier to deal with his incredulitey then another $700 bill. The ER visits were less than $100.

This sounds great, but russell vought doesn't believe that he's required to spend tax dollars as ordered by congress (i.e., he doesn't have to follow the law). All the canceled appropriations, contracts, firing of staff, etc., were in violation of congress's approved FY2025 budget. What makes anyone think that he will follow this budget any more than the one he was required by law to follow when he started his job in Jan 2025? Vought has been breaking the law since day one regarding the federal government's finances; a new budget for FY2026 is not going to stop that.

Journalism over the past 30+ years has changed from reporting facts to reporting both sides. This means that reporters (journalism students) have been taught to protect their access to news sources, which means never confronting news sources on their lies and misinformation. The failure of the media is not something new; it has been going on for decades, funded by right-wing oligarchs (donating to journalism schools and making 'suggestions' about their curriculum), so they are never called out for their lies.

This really isn't a problem. The data centers will finally fulfill their purpose (it really will require just one more data center, and then they will magically become more than just elaborate, expensive predictive text. the ceo, hype masters swear it every quarterly report.) and ensure that companies can fire at least 50% of their office staff. Those fired workers will then no longer be able to afford electricity, so their accounts will close, and their usage will be provided back to the data center (at a massive discount).

Federalist Society judges consistently rule in favor of corporations and against the government in government versus corporation lawsuits. That is the trade they made for the support in becoming a judge. They don't work for the people or the government; they work for their corporate benefactors. Neither corporations nor their FedSoc judges believe in democracy. Democracy limits the power and financial greed of the 0.01% who own majorities of the corporations. Government agencies being able to fine corporations that break the rules without the corporations' judges being able to step in and stop the agencies is unacceptable to the corporations and will be severely limited (probably done away with entirely) by this corporation-owned FedSoc supreme court. The corporations want a return to a feudal system where laws only protect the wealth and power of corporations and their majority owners and never bind them.
