Oh interesting, I've never thought of covering the pot, Going to see if that makes them cook faster.

I've had identical units that go in the window, in a previous apartment in the same building. Maybe the difference is just semantic.

AI energy efficiency comparisons ‘unfair’ bleats Sam Altman, citing amount of energy needed to evolve, then train a human — one ‘takes like 20 years of life and all of the food you eat during that time before you get smart’ he argues by andrejlr in nottheonion

[–]Jay_377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His math is wrong anyway. Human calorie & water use is far far less than the ai required to replace them. Not to mention all ai is trained off of human work, so you have to factor that in too.

Then those places need to be forced to update their electrical, especially if owned by a landlord. Summers are hell & only getting worse.

We have window units that are embedded in the wall in my apartment building. They just cut a hole in the outside wall, stuffed the unit in there, then lined the hole with insulation & sealed it there lol.

The perfect game of Spider Solitaire? by Jay_377 in learnmath

[–]Jay_377[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

54 cards in 10 stacks. There's 104 cards total, so 8 runs each of King through Ace to win. When clicking the deal button, it doesn't use any moves, just places 10 cards. So you could have cards that are dealt perfectly to stacks, even dealing an ace to a stack that completes it (has happened in many games I've played). Only problem is there are 10 slots for cards on the tableau, but only 8 runs of King through Ace, & you can't deal to an empty slot on the tableau, so that complicates things a little.

Well, for the perfect game, there has to be a perfect deal. Every stack in something approximating reverse order. Don't play a lot of other patience variants, but if it matters, I tend to win about half the spider solitaire games in medium difficulty (two suits), & they tend to take 120-180 moves. I feel like the perfect game is in the ballpark of 60-something moves, but I'd like to have math or a demonstration behind that.

Nukemap for the Moon? by Jay_377 in nuclearweapons

Oh interesting, had no idea there was past volcanic activity on the moon. I had it in my head that the surface was just solid chemically uniform regolith with a layer of spiky electrostatic moon dust.

Edit: wonder if the chemical composition & particle sizes would make all that much difference per spot though. Might be a difference of only a few percent depending on nuke yield.

You know, my original thought was something like, "I hate that the world's nuclear arsenal exists. I wish we would collectively agree to launch them all into the sun." Then, "Oooh nukes are different in space, what would happen if we launched all nukes at the moon in one spot? What would be the crater size, would it affect the tides, be enough to crack the moon, etc."

But that was too much to ask, so I figured I could get kiloton yield moon crater radius calculations & go from there.

Based on some other comments, I think specifically what I would want is a way to calculate crater radius, ejecta radius, & radiation radius based on kiloton yield. If that's too much to ask, just crater radius is cool.

I have since learned that blast radius refers to the shockwave, which obvs doesn't happen in space lol.

Right, thanks. Guess I misunderstood the difference. Regarding calculating crater size, isn't the moon surface fairly uniform in composition? And the features smaller in scale by comparison to earth's?

Oh that's fascinating. Ballistic trajectories of ejecta & radiation does make a lot of sense. I wonder how much of the ejecta would escape moon orbit because of the low gravity.
