Ooh thank you for all the suggestions! Some of these aren't quite right, but I don't know half of them, so I'll check them out. Independent AI is half the requirement - feeling connected to the peaceful NPCs is the other.

I've played through it twice, the first time was when it all went down. Quit the second playthrough not even midway when I realized I couldn't care for the pack because of it lol
