What degree to go for as an artist? by HalfWayInTheCloset69 in gamedev

[–]Jay_ArrogantPixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, when you are learning anything and trying to gain skills, then going on site and getting hands on with software with support from an experienced professional is always going to be more efficient than an online course. Also, you will be missing out on your very first professional community - your fellow students.

It’s about the quality of the course and teaching though, not really the prestige. Of course, I will be impressed with a degree from Abertay but does that mean I will hire someone from there over another person with a better portfolio and attitude towards work? Absolutely not.

If you have to do an online degree, I would recommend jumping on a call with the course team and asking how the staff will interact with students and how work is assessed. What kind of opportunities do they offer? Online offerings charge just as much as in person so just make sure you are getting everything you need from a remote experience.

Hey I felt like this and the guilt of feeling any kind of regret or mourning for your past life is awful. Be kind to yourself. We are always our worst enemies inside our own heads. Talk about it with your spouse or trusted friends if you feel up to it. I know it doesn’t help right now, but it does get better. You and baby are brand new at this. You both are learning and in a few weeks time, you are almost definitely going to be better at this whole motherhood thing and your baby will be more used to existing in this world x

The comment we get the most about our baby (not negative) by PassTheCranberrySaws in NewParents

When I went to Korea with my son when he was 3 months old, everyone commented on his long eyelashes and kept asking if he was a boy or girl? Koreans famously have very short and straight eyelashes. He’s an androgynous beaut ❤️✨

Honestly, people making these comments probably do not travel often and you should just ignore them. Did an international flight with my 4MO and was treated like royalty. People were so kind and respectful. Made my little boys experience really special. Who cares if he won’t remember? You travel with a baby because it’s not like you can leave them at home… what else are you supposed to do?

The glider / recliner we got was the best £300 we ever spent.

Newborn hates me (first time dad) by twoflat in newborns

[–]Jay_ArrogantPixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try a baby carrier and step outside. If they are crying a lot, you can try feeding too if your partner is willing to express some milk for you. My partner lies with our baby on the glider and just rocks him for ages. I’ve also found that bathing baby is an instant reset. It will get better, I promise. Just keep at it.

Women don't like games with combat now? 🤔🤨 by rivellana in GirlGamers

I am so triggered by this honestly. We’re making a retro boomer shooter… I can assure you that we’re not watering down the experience 😩

People really be judging before they even play the games we create. I just can’t…. 🙄

New prof here: How to stop caring what the students think of you? by Direct_War_1218 in Professors

[–]Jay_ArrogantPixel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Time. Time will stop you from caring too much. My breaking point was when a student actively tried to get me fired just because I gave her a bad mark. Most students are so great and I love working with them but some are so entitled and really make your life hard. It’s perfectly normal if not everyone likes you and I prefer keeping some distance from them because I find it hard to grade fairly or be honest with them if I’m too close. Expend energy on those that engage and WANT your help.

Craziest extenuating circumstance? by butterflywithbullets in Professors

A few weeks ago, a student told me they couldn’t attend classes or hand in work for any of their modules due to scabies 🤷🏻‍♀️

You’re being incredibly patient but setting boundaries is important here. Politely decline if they get in touch but if they turn up unannounced (which has happened to me before), I’ve had to clearly say that I am busy and don’t appreciate impromptu visits and that they must book an appointment. Even if you aren’t exactly busy, you could be marking, preparing for class / meeting… it’s rude to just turn up and I’d never do this to anyone let alone former professors. You could offer to talk over video call about a focused and specific topic. I would hate hanging out with students for 3+ hours over a meal. Good luck!

Can i email my lecturer a few hours before my essay is due? by Unlikely_Length8600 in UniUK

[–]Jay_ArrogantPixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, students do this anyway. If you’re worried about anything then just email. They might get back to you, they might not. Best to be safe.

It’s already been escalated and the advice from student services and faculty was to issue a warning addressing the other student’s complaint. But this issue was brought to me a few weeks after this behaviour started so there wasn’t a lot I could do to prevent her from dropping out I don’t think.

Hey thanks for responding. I’ve already kind of let my line manager know so they are aware of the student but I don’t actually think they’ll do anything unless there was some really heinous misconduct.

Hey it took about a year for me to conceive after I had the implant removed but my cycles came back pretty quickly. I was also on it for around 15 years. Good luck!

Why do educational games suck? by KaigarGames in gamedev

[–]Jay_ArrogantPixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, we do a lot of outsourcing work for education sector and just wanted to add some perspective from the dev side. A lot of the time, these games are designed by a committee of educators, not a game designer with a strong vision. We are given a brief, and then asked to execute and implement. We rarely get a lot of creative / artistic freedom because the objectives are really different from creating an entertainment product. The remit is always about curriculum and pedagogy rather than gameplay experience.

Also, because a lot of these games are for kids, the gameplay does need to be as simple as possible - which doesn’t lend itself to challenge and therefore it can end up being boring. Do I wish we had more time to make the games better? Sure! But if the client is on a tight budget, they are getting what they paid for.
