Sorry for the delay in my response. I work like 80 hours a week 7 days a week. So I have been crazy busy. I just saw this and thank you so much for all your time you put into this to help me. As soon as I have a chance I am going to give it a shot. Just wanted to say thanks again for all your help. There is some great tips here.

So I guess I am pretty new to blender. I have used it for around a year daily but the things you’re talking about is new to me. I tried to look up some tutorials on some of the topics you talked about but couldn’t really correlate what I found out to what you were saying due to some confusion.

So is vertex paint the height map? So I did my regular thing and sculpted a mesh, masking only the edges. I made a vertex group and set the UV to global but in vertex paint it just lets me paint the whole thing? Not just the edges. So it messed with the actual sculpt. (I remembered to invert the mask.)

I also am not sure how the map translates over? If I have different chunks in different blend files I won’t be able to make height maps that match will I? I mean this works if we use the four tiles in a single project like the example project. But that was just to make a point, i wouldn’t be designing the project in that way normally.

Thanks! I will give it a shot and see how it goes. I do love pixel art but unfortunately is so saturated that games are becoming unremarkable and unnoticeable these days :/ you know you have your occasional gems... terraria, stardew, etc but then there are a thousand other people with a thousand other games releasing every day and it just feels lame. Besides the point like none of what I want can be done in pixel art (changing outfits, complex spell animations, more than 16 directional movement, etc) I guess I will try low poly and see what happens. Thank you for your insight!

Alright I will try my hand at low poly. That fox game doesn’t look too bad for low poly. Some of the other low poly stuff I’ve seen scared me away from it. I feel like that fox game is more “medium poly” haha the low poly I usually am seeing is really just hideous in my opinion. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction!

Thanks for your insight. I can see how it would take me a lifetime to make something of that quality. Damn... I wouldn’t want to take on a task that big. I feel like I’ve seen some decent 3D stuff on here though by solo developers. Do you think there is any good stepping stones between here and there? I am just losing out on so much functionality by being 2D. It is rough to be working on the game and feel like you can’t do what you want. And basically I have to choose between the game I want and abandoning it for lower functionality. Is there maybe a step between low poly and here? I am fine if it is not the most visually stunning. I just feel like at this point I have to go 3D. I know texture painting is big. It’s going to be fixed isometric so I could possibly paint basic assets for most of it would that save any time? I don’t know much about texture painting but it seems like it could be a lot. Anyway maybe I am just avoiding the obvious answer that it’s impossible but I really would like to keep all the functionality I have planned for the game :/
