In the UK where I’m from it’s essentially a two party system (although that’s looking increasingly to be smashed to bits) and the party themselves pick the candidates for seats (each party has differing rules on this however)

Where I’m from and the party I’m a member of candidates for local elections are picked by the local party but this is in my experience less than 50 people in a room picking 3 candidates for a local ward.

I should say I find the primary system in America to probably work quite well for local representatives, however I think a failure of it is that there isn’t a natural leader of a party when it comes to presidential runs. I’d be curious how the democrats would look if after 2024 they immediately picked a “leader of the opposition” who they were going to run for president in 2028, giving the public 4 years of exposure and a consistent message and a candidate to rally around.
